Lu Feng Concludes Stay at CIMSS: Lu Feng of the Chinese National Satellite Meteorological Center in Beijing concluded a 21 month visit at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). During his stay he finished the research that will comprise his PhD thesis at Peking University; Chris Velden and Paul Menzel helped guide his work. This included applying Earth edge measurements for navigating within one pixel images from 3-axis stable platforms (this approach does not rely on landmarks and hence is not vulnerable to excessive cloud cover), demonstrating improved atmospheric motion vectors when navigation is improved, and developing geometric techniques (stereo and shadow) for validating radiometric (CO2 slicing, IR window) cloud top heights. He will be defending his thesis later this year. (W.P. Menzel, CIMSS, 608-263-4930)
