ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Manuscript on Comparison Between ABI, SEVIRI and GOES Imager Published:  A manuscript entitled "Comparison between current and future environmental satellite imagers on cloud classification using MODIS" has been published in Remote Sensing of Environment (2007, Vol. 108, pp. 311-326). Co-authors are Zhenglong Li, Jun Li (CIMSS), W. Paul Menzel (STAR, now CIMSS), Timothy J. Schmit (STAR) and Steven A. Ackerman (CIMSS). It is available here: ftp://ftp.ssec.wisc.edu/ABS/publications/classification_by_different_sensors.pdf. (Jun Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu)

NESDIS Cooperative Institute Administrators Workshop and Directors Meeting: The annual NESDIS Cooperative Institute (CI) Administrators Workshop and Directors Meeting was hosted by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, June 6-8. Participants included directors and administrative personnel from CIMSS, the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA, Colorado State University), the Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (CREST, a consortium of universities with City University of New York as the lead), and the Cooperative Institute for Oceanographic Satellite Studies (CIOSS, Oregon State University), personnel from the NOAA Grants Management Division, and STAR management (Al Powell, Steve Goodman, Ingrid Guch, and Jeff Key). The Administrators Workshop addressed special award conditions, legal issues, reporting, Grants Online, and upcoming CI recompetitions. The Directors Meeting addressed CI student exchange, the recent CIOSS 5-year review, a satellite algorithm testbed concept, climate data records, funding, and collaborations. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

GOES Imager Mesoscale Winds Distributed to Local NWS Office: Experimental GOES imager derived mesoscale atmospheric motion vectors (MesoAMV) are being evaluated for operational use at Sullivan (Milwaukee) NWS office through the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS). The winds were made available May 10th, 2007 and are now being provided to enhance short-term mesoscale forecasting, especially for near storm environmental applications. Here is a comment from Jeff Craven, Science Operations Officer (SOO) Sullivan NWS: "CIMSS has provided Mesoscale GOES winds for us. We are the first and ONLY office to try this out so far. This will be excellent for near storm environment applications.", Feedback from local NWS forecasters will provide the opportunity to improve the product before operational introduction. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283, K. Bedka, CIMSS, 608-265-0854)

Figure caption: An AWIPS derived image showing 200-300 mb mesoscale satellite wind barbs in black. In red are rawinsonde, NOAA 404 Mhz wind profiler, and WSR-88D radar VWP winds at 250 mb. Yellow streamlines represent NWP model predicted flow at 250 mb. Colors indicate NWP wind speed (scale in upper left). Visible satellite is underneath. All winds are in knots. All wind types seem to follow the streamlines very well and are in good speed agreeement. An exception occurs across southern Illinois, where the satellite winds seem to indicate a jet position a bit further north than that shown by NWP.

VISIT Distance Learning Activities at CIMSS: Two Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lessons were presented by staff at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS): "The Enhanced-V: A Satellite Severe Storm Signature" on June 4, and "Basic Satellite Principles" on June 6, 2007. Forecasters from NOAA's National Weather Service forecast offices in Reno, Nevada, Anchorage, Alaska, and Great Falls, Montana participated in the VISIT lessons. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425)
