Second Meeting of WMO Space Task Group for IPY: The World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) Space Task Group (STG) for the International Polar Year (IPY) held its second meeting via telecon on June 14. The STG was established for the purpose of space agency planning, processing, and archiving of IPY Earth Observation legacy datasets. Jeff Key and Pablo Clemente-Colon are NOAA representatives on the STG. The primary task of the STG now, three months into the IPY period, is to determine the "portfolio" of IPY satellite data products that each space agency is developing. The IPY portfolios may be comprised of new products, new ways of accessing existing products, operational support for IPY field programs, agreements to release data that was not otherwise freely available, and plans for archiving IPY legacy datasets. COMET COMAP Course Instruction: S. Bachmeier, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), lectured as a guest instructor at the Cooperative Program for Meteorology, Education and Training (COMET) Mesoscale Analysis and Prediction (COMAP) residence course in Boulder, Colorado on June 13, 2007. The 2.5 hour presentation on "Satellite Applications: Dynamic Feature Identification" was followed by a laboratory exercise to apply some of the satellite feature identification concepts that were discussed in the lecture. The COMAP course was attended by National Weather Service (NWS) Science and Operations Officers (SOOs). (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

VISIT Distance Learning Activities at CIMSS: Three Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lessons were presented by staff at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS): "Mesoscale Convective Vortices" on June 12, "The Enhanced-V: A Satellite Severe Storm Signature" on June 15, and "Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Products in Advanced Weather Information Processing System (AWIPS)" on June 15, 2007. Forecasters from NOAA's National Weather Service forecast offices in Indianapolis, Indiana, Boise, Idaho, and Anchorage, Alaska participated in the VISIT lessons. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425)

Other Meetings and Telecons:

None.

VISITORS:

University of Alabama - Huntsville Scientist Visit: Dr. John Mecikalski and Wayne MacKenzie visited CIMSS June 4-5 to discuss satellite-based aviation weather research collaborations. Topics of discussion included the advancement of satellite derived convective nowcasting fields using current convective initiation, atmospheric state, and severe convection radiance signatures (overshooting top/thermal couplet/enhanced-V). This collaboration is supported by NASA and NOAA GOES-R Risk Reduction and Algorithm Working Group (AWG) resources. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283 and K. Bedka, CIMSS, 608-265-0854)
