Paper Submitted on the ABI and the Continuation of GOES Sounder Products: A manuscript entitled “The GOES-R ABI (Advanced Baseline Imager) and the continuation of GOES-N class sounder products” was submitted to the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology. In general, it is shown that the ABI can provide adequate continuity of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-N class current sounder products in order to bridge the gap until the advent of an advanced infrared GOES sounder. Smoke From Fires Burning in Idaho and Montana Reaches Wisconsin: Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-13) visible imagery and MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) true color imagery and aerosol optical depth products confirmed the long range transport of smoke (from wildfires burning in Idaho and Montana) that reached as far as Wisconsin on August 13, 2007. An animation of GOES-13 visible channel imagery posted on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://tinyurl.com/yrwm8s) showed thick smoke trapped in the valleys of Idaho and Montana during the morning hours, with a transition to rapid smoke plume growth as fire activity flared up during the afternoon and evening hours.
