ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING MARCH 8, 2008

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Elementary School Talk on Satellites and Weather: T. Schmit talked to the fifth grade class at Blessed Sacrament School in Madison, Wisconsin. The talk covered early geostationary imager efforts, differences between the visible, infrared and water vapor bands, and near real-time images. In addition, there was a discussion on how to build a weather satellite. As usual, the questions were very good: Can we see in the infrared? How hot is the infrared? Can the infrared hurt us? (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

GOES-O Material: At the request of E. M. Miller, GOES Program Office, T. Schmit supplied information on the expected benefits of the GOES-O Imager beyond the GOES-13/O instruments; e.g., how the improved spatial resolution of the 13.3 micron band would improve products such as cloud-top pressure. Apparently some of the material will be used as part of a GOES-O decal. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

IHC Presentation on GOES-R: Material was supplied to J. Gurka, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Program Office, for the Inter-department Hurricane Conference (IHC). The title was "Baseline Instruments for the GOES-R Series: Providing Major Improvements to Hurricane Observations." The authors are J. Gurka, T. J. Schmit, T. Renkevens, M. DeMaria, and C. Velden. The oral presentation was given by J. Gurka in Charleston, SC. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291)

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lessons "Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Regional Forecast System (CRAS) Forecast Imagery in Advanced Weather Information Processing System (AWIPS)" and "Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Products in AWIPS" were offered by staff from CIMSS on March 5 and 6, 2008. Forecasters from the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices in La Crosse, Wisconsin and Pendleton, Oregon participated in the VISIT lessons. In addition, three new cases were added to the CIMSS Satellite Blog ( http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog ) during the week of March 3-7, with examples of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), MODIS, and Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) imagery showing Gulf Stream sea surface temperature, snow in the south-central US, and transverse banding in the southeastern US. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958. S. Lindstrom, CIMSS)

ASPB Annual Property Inventory Completed: After the actual physical verification over the last week of the over 60 property assets for which the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) is responsible, annual certification results were provided to the Silver Spring, MD headquarters of the Eastern US-servicing Norfolk Region of the NOAA Personal Property Office, on 05 Mar 2008. One outstanding issue will be rectified shortly, as the completion of the entries of a couple recent acquisitions, into the "Sunflower Enterprise" software inventory system (used by NOAA), is nearly done. (G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, gary.s.wade@noaa.gov)

Manuscript Reviews: T. Schmit reviewed two manuscripts, one for the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and one for the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology. J. Key reviewed a paper for Nature. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
