GOES-R AWG Legacy Sounding Algorithm for ABI Delivered: The GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Sounding Team at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) delivered the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) legacy sounding algorithm Version 2.0 (V2.0A) to the Algorithm Integration Team (AIT) for testing. The Version 2.0 package is based on a physical retrieval algorithm and has been successfully tested with Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) data. Intercalibration Manuscript Submitted: A manuscript was submitted on the Geostationary Simultaneous Nadir Observations (GSNOs) between the Earth Observing System (EOS) Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) onboard Aqua and a global array of geostationary imagers. To the first approximation, most of the bands on the world’s geostationary imagers are reasonably well-calibrated. The authors are M.M. Gunshor, T.J. Schmit, W.P. Menzel, and D.C. Tobin. The title is “Intercalibration of broadband geostationary imagers using AIRS” and it was submitted to the Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, W.P. Menzel, CIMSS, 608-263-4930, D. Tobin, CIMSS, 608-265-6281)

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lessons "Basic Satellite Principles" and "The Enhanced-V: A Satellite Severe Storm Signature" were led by staff from CIMSS on April 16 and 22, 2008. Forecasters from the National Weather Service (NWS) Office of Climate, Water, and Weather Services (OCWWS) Climate Services Division and the NWS forecast office at Riverton, Wyoming participated in the VISIT lessons. In addition, S. Bachmeier and S. Lindstrom participated in a "beta-test" review of a new VISIT lesson titled "QuikSCAT Winds" on April 24. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958. S. Lindstrom, CIMSS)

Manuscript Reviews: M. Pavolonis completed two manuscript reviews for the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology. Both manuscripts were related to satellite-derived cloud properties. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)
