CIMSS scientists Attend ITSC-16: Several Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists presented research results at the 16th International TOVS Study Conference, held from 6-14 May in Angra do Reis Brazil. Presenters from CIMSS included Kathy Strabala, Liam Gumley, Tom Achtor, Bill Smith, Paolo Antonelli, Jun Li, Eva Borbas, Dave Tobin, and Allen Huang (who is also Co-Chair of the group). The conference features a wide range of results applying Satellite Sounder data in Numerical Weather Prediction, Retrieval Science, Science Applications and Climate. The Study Conference also breaks into topical working groups on these topics to provide actions and recommendations to members, collaborators and agencies. (T. Achtor, CIMSS, 608-263-4206)

GOES and SO2 Paper Published: The article, "Using the GOES Sounder to monitor upper level SO2 from volcanic eruptions", was published in Journal of Geophysical Research. The complete citation is Ackerman, S. A., A. J. Schreiner, T. J. Schmit, H. M. Woolf, J. Li, and M. Pavolonis (2008), Using the GOES Sounder to monitor upper level SO2 from volcanic eruptions, J. Geophys. Res., 113, D14S11, doi:10.1029/2007JD009622. (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Presentation at NASA Science Team Meeting: A. Heidinger and M. Pavolonis presented recent work at the First MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer)/VIIRS (Visible/Infrared Imager and Radiometer Suite) NASA Science Team held in Baltimore, Maryland. A. Heidinger presented a study of the predicted cloud-top pressure uncertainty offered by MODIS and VIIRS. This work showed the drastic impact of the loss of any infrared absorption channels on VIIRS. M. Pavolonis presented work on the improvements to infrared cloud remote sensing offered by merging observations with clear-sky radiative transfer models to better isolate cloud spectral signatures. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597)

Presentations at the GOES-R Proving Ground Kick-off Meeting : On May 15 and 16, in Boulder, CO, S. Bachmeier, J. Gerth, and T. Schmit gave a presentation on the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) proposal/plans for the Proving Ground. This presentation included current/near-term activities, coordination and feedback and out-year plans. In addition, S. Bachmeier participated in the National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS)/ Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) Training Resources Development Workshop, held earlier in the week at Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology Education and Training (COMET) in Boulder. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)

NOAA International Affairs Council Polar Committee Meeting: The Polar Committee of the NOAA International Affairs Council (IAC) met on May 15. J. Key participated by phone. The committee was established to serve as a policy coordinating forum, to maintain awareness of NOAA’s work in the polar regions and, as appropriate, to address crosscutting program issues including review and oversight for PPBES purposes. Key is the NESDIS representative on the IAC Polar Committee. The NESDIS representative on the IAC is Brent Smith (NESDIS International and Interagency Affairs Office). Eric Madsen participates as a NESDIS International and Interagency Affairs Office liaison to the Polar Committee. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jeff.key@noaa.gov)

Second Planning Meeting for a U.S.-Canada Bilateral Workshop on Arctic Ice and Water: The Second Planning Meeting for a U.S.-Canada Bilateral Workshop on Arctic ice and water was held on May 14. Jeff Key participated by phone. Greg Withee, NOAA, and Ken Korporal, Canadian Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Secretariat, are planning for a U.S.-Canada bilateral workshop on Arctic ice and water issues. One of the main goals of the workshop is to explore potential U.S.-Canada collaborative activities regarding ice observations and their applications in various societal benefit areas. Jeff Key has been asked to lead the organization of the ice component of the workshop. The workshop is tentatively planned for late October at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Virginia. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
