Regional Data Stewardship Workshop: The Sub-regional (“Midwest”) Data Stewardship Workshop was held on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus on 21-22 May 2008, co-hosted by the National Weather Service (NWS) Central Region (CR; D. Kluck), and by the Wisconsin State Climatology Office (Prof. J. A. Young). NWS Data Acquisition Program Managers (DAPM), state and regional climatologists, and staff from the NOAA/NESDIS National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), amongst others, participated in presentations and discussions that focused on the quality of NOAA data. Amidst the meeting proceedings, CR Director L. Maximuk and Milwaukee-Sullivan NWS Forecast Office Meteorologist-In-Charge K. Rizzo visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) to discuss some of the local CIMSS activities dealing with the NWS and satellite applications in AWIPS (the NWS Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System). NPP Calibration/Validation Mission Operations Peer Review: That National Polar Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Integrated Program Office held an NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) Calibration/Validation (Cal/Val) Mission Operations Peer Review on 22 May 2008 in Silver Spring, MD. CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lessons "Water Vapor Imagery and Potential Vorticity Analysis" (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/visit/wv_pv.html) and "Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Regional Assimilation System (CRAS) Forecast Imagery in Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS)" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/visit/CRAS_AWIPS.html) were offered by staff from CIMSS on May 20 and May 22, 2008. Forecasters from the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices at Pendleton, Oregon and Rapid City, South Dakota participated in the two VISIT lessons. In addition, new cases were added to the CIMSS Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog), with examples of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery showing tornadic convection over the Front Range and the central Plains, seasonal changes in vegetation and fog/stratus features in California, and updated imagery of volcanic plumes from the Chaiten volcano in Chile.
