Visit to EUMETSAT: D. Santek was invited to the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) in Darmstadt, Germany from 2-10 June 2008 to discuss satellite-derived polar winds from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data. EUMETSAT is in the process of evaluating the satellite winds code developed at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) in preparation for their operational derivation of satellite winds from Metop AVHRR by the end of 2008. D. Santek also gave a presentation on the status, application, and technical details associated with the polar winds project at CIMSS. (D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410)

Antarctic Meteorological Observation, Modeling, and Forecasting Workshop: The 3rd Antarctic Meteorological Observation, Modeling, and Forecasting Workshop was held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, June 9-12. The workshop was organized by Shelley Knuth and Matthew Lazzara (Antarctica Meteorological Research Center, AMRC, Space Science and Engineering Center). The workshops bring together scientists from around the world to discuss new research results, observational systems, and model developments. (M. Lazzara, SSEC; S. Knuth, SSEC; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Cloud Application Team Critical Design Review: The GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Cloud Application Team held its Critical Design Review (CDR) on June 10 at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Team members present included Andy Heidinger, Mike Pavolonis, and Pat Heck. The team, along with the AWG Algorithm Implementation Team (AIT), briefed 714 slides in roughly 8.5 hours. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Pat Heck, CIMSS, 608-262-7889)

CIMSS VISIT Activites: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lesson "The Enhanced-V: A Satellite Severe Storm Signature" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/visit/ev.html) was offered by staff from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on June 9, 2008. Forecasters from the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices at Riverton, Wyoming, North Webster, Indiana, and the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center at Camp Springs, Maryland participated in the VISIT lesson. In addition, the CIMSS Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog) was updated with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images showing the extent of river flooding over portions of the Upper Midwest states, and thick smoke from a large wildfire burning in North Carolina. It was noted that the NWS forecast office at Des Moines, Iowa also posted a MODIS image comparison showing river flooding on their website, using imagery obtained from the Space Science and Engineering Center at the University of Wisconsin (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)
