ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Remote Sensing of Tropospheric Pollution from Space: The June 2008 BAMS cover article entitled “Remote Sensing of Tropospheric Pollution from Space” provides a survey of past, present, and future capabilities for space-based measurements of global trace gas distributions and discusses current capabilities for assimilation of composition measurements using the Real-time Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS). The article also discusses the role of Geostationary trace gas measurements within the context of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) and national priorities for space-based measurements in the next decade. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Sounding Application Team Critical Design Review: The GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Sounding Application Team held its Critical Design Review (CDR) on June 18. Team member J. Li presented, although with co-chair T. Schmit. The team, along with the AWG Algorithm Implementation Team (AIT), briefed approximately 296 slides. The sounding products covered included Legacy Vertical Moisture Profile, Legacy Vertical Temperature Profile, Derived Stability Indexes, and Total Precipitable Water. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, J. Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755)

Manuscript on GOES cloudy sounding retrieval submitted: An manuscript entitled "Forecasting and nowcasting improvement in cloudy regions with high temporal GOES Sounder infrared radiance measurements" has been submitted to Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmosphere for publication. This paper reveals that the GOES cloudy sounding retrievals are useful at the early stage of storms, when nearby clouds are considered thin or low. Co-authors are Zhenglong Li, Jun Li, W. Paul Menzel, J. P. Nelson (CIMSS), T. J. Schmit (STAR), E. Weisz and S. A. Ackerman (CIMSS). (Zhenglong Li and Jun Li, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu, 608- 262-3755).
