Annual AWG Meeting in Madison: The annual Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) meeting was held in Madison, WI, June 23-26, 2008. The workshop was hosted by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. There were over 135 participants. Participating NESDIS/STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) members were J. Key, T. Schmit, A. Heidinger, M. Pavolonis, R.B. Pierce, and G.S. Wade, filling roles such as being team chairs (4), key team members or members of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), or the program committee. Numerous CIMSS scientists also participated, reflecting CIMSS' strong role in the AWG. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov).

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS VISIT Activites: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lesson "Water Vapor Imagery and Potential Vorticity Analysis" (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/visit/wv_pv.html) was offered by staff from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on June 23, 2008. Forecasters from the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office at Morristown, Tennessee participated in the VISIT lesson. In addition, the CIMSS Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog) was updated with examples of imagery showing phenomena such as thick smoke from fire activity in California, the transport of airborne Saharan dust across the Atlantic Ocean, and mesoscale convective vorticies in both the tropical Atlantic and over the central US.
