International Polar Year Open Science Conference in St. Petersburg, Russia: The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) held an Open Science Conference titled “Polar Research – Arctic and Antarctic Perspectives in the International Polar Year (IPY)” in St. Petersburg, Russia, July 7-11, 2008. The IPY Joint Committee has endorsed this event as the first in a series of international interdisciplinary IPY conferences. It is cosponsored by ICSU and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). J. Key was asked to give a presentation on the Integrated Global Observing Strategy (IGOS) Cryosphere Theme, which he leads, and the status of its transition into the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) framework. He also gave a talk on recent changes in Arctic clouds as observed from space. This is an important forum for the exchange of information on progress and successes in the International Polar Year. An important side meeting of the Tiksi Observatory Science Committee took place. J. Key is a member of this advisory group. The Tiksi Observatory is a NOAA-led (John Calder, OAR) atmospheric observatory being developed in Tiksi, Russia. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Support for JPL to Read and Calibrate GOES Data: A user from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Cartographic Laboratory was having trouble calibrating Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Imager data they had obtained via another source. Sample datasets (of vary units and formats) and guidance was given so that the data can now be correctly calibrated using their processing system. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

UW-Madison Teacher Workshop : The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department hosted 28 educators from around the country on July 9th and 10th at a workshop on Geoscience Time Scales and Global Climate Change. This NOAA-supported event covered the topics of weather and climate, geological time, and global climate change, focusing on the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Summary for Policy Makers. Twenty-one teachers rated the experience as "excellent"; the rest marked the next best category in the evaluations. One teacher commented that the workshop was "the single best professional development class this year (out of four)". (M. Mooney, CIMSS, margaret.mooney@ssec.wisc.edu)
