ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING AUGUST 9, 2008

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Annual Satellite Product Development Review: J. Key, M. Pavolonis, B. Pierce and T. Schmit, along with a host of Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) personnel, participated in both the Product Services Development and Improvement (PSDI) and GOES Improved Measurements and Product Assurance Plan (GIMPAP) Annual Satellite Product Development Reviews on 6-7 Aug 2008. J. Key is on the GIMPAP Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, mpav@ssec.wisc.edu; R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@ssec.wisc.edu)

CEOS Action Completed: A. Heidinger fulfilled a Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) Action by extending the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) data set to June 1, 2008. The data has been made available on the PATMOS-x website (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/clavr/patmosx). The PATMOS-x data-set now extends from September 1981 to July 2008. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Paper on Satellite-Derived Global Hyperspectral IR Emissivity Data Published: A manuscript titled "Derivation of global hyperspectral resolution surface emissivity spectra from advanced infrared sounder radiance measurements" has been published in Geophysical Research Letters (35, L15807, doi:10.1029/2008GL034559). Co-authors are Jun Li and Jinlong Li (CIMSS). (Jun Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755, Jun.Li@ssec.wisc.edu)

Presentations on GOES Given to the Storm Prediction Center: Two talks were (remotely) given to Storm Prediction Center (SPC) in Norman, OK. The titles of the presentations are “The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R series” and “Hyperspectral Sounding from a Geostationary Satellite”. The presentations are available upon request. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov).

Abstracts Submitted to the AMS Conference: Several abstracts were submitted to the January 2009 Sixteenth American Meteorological Society (AMS) Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography and NPOESS/GOES-R Symposium. Titles include “Soundings from Current and Future Geostationary Satellites”, “GOES-R Proving Ground Plans for a Weather Event Simulator” and “New Automated Methods for Detecting Volcanic Ash and Retrieving its Properties from Infrared Radiances”. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov, M. Pavolonis E/RA2, 608-262-9597, mpav@ssec.wisc.edu)

CRAS Gridded Data in Local NWS AWIPS: As part of a continuing initiative to foster cooperation within NOAA and translate research to operational products, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the NESDIS Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) develop new satellite products and disseminate them to the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Sullivan, Wisconsin, where they are evaluated for their usefulness in operational forecasting. This week, the Sullivan NWS was introduced to gridded data from the CIMSS Regional Assimilation System (CRAS), which has a purpose of illustrating the benefit of satellite observations in numerical weather prediction (NWP). The CRAS data, which has been added into the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS), will give forecasters a different perspective than existing NWP models. Since 2006, the Sullivan NWS has been using synthetic infrared window and water vapor forecast imagery from the CRAS, resulting in over 80 references in NWS Area Forecast Discussions (AFDs) since then. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, Robert.Aune@noaa.gov; J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)
