EUMETSAT Conference: A. Heidinger and T. Schmit participated in the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Meteorological Satellite Conference that was held in Darmstadt, Germany, 8-12 September 2008. The oral presentations were titled "Towards a consensus calibration of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) reflectance channels for climate studies" (Heidinger) and "Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) derived product images: Past, present and future" (Schmit). As expected, many countries were represented at the international satellite conference. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning session "Water Vapor Imagery and Potential Vorticity Analysis" (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/visit/wv_pv.html) was led by staff from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on September 9, 2008. Forecasters from the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office at Lubbock, Texas participated in the lesson. In addition, the CIMSS Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/) was updated with examples of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) imagery of Hurricane Ike, including GOES-11 Super Rapid Scan Operations (SRSO) visible and InfraRed (IR) images at 1-minute intervals. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)

Other Meetings and Telecons:

None.

VISITORS:

NSSL/CIMMS Visit and Seminar: Dr. Valliappa Lakshmanan (University of Oklahoma - Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies (CIMMS)) and Dr. Robert Rabin (NOAA NSSL/CIMSS) visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies/Space Science Engineering Center (CIMSS/SSEC) on September 2-3 to discussion satellite object tracking collaboration. Dr. Lakshmanan helped develop objective object tracking technique for radar data. There is an interest at NSSL/SPC to do similar research with satellite date. The CIMSS Satellite-based Nowcasting and Aviation APplications (SNAAP) team has interest in applying the object tracking technique to satellite-based convective initiation nowcasting algorithm. Dr. Lakshmanan also gave a seminar titled "Data Mining Storm Attributes in Real-time: How is it done? What questions can it answer?". (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283)
