ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 28, 2008

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Group on Earth Observations User Interface Committee Meeting: Jeff Key participated (via phone) in the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) User Interface Committee (UIC) meeting. The meeting was held in Boulder, Colorado. Key provided a report on the status and future plans of the Integrated Global Observing Strategy (IGOS) Cryosphere Theme and its transition, along with the other IGOS themes, into the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) framework. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Monthly Weather Review Article Selected as "Paper of Note": An article describing a new Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) algorithm that assigns probabilities of secondary eyewall formation in hurricanes has been selected as a "Paper of Note" by the Senior Editor of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. An abstract is scheduled to appear in the November issue of BAMS. The article is now available as an Early Online Release in Monthly Weather Review. (J. Kossin, CIMSS, 608-265-5356, M. Sitkowski, Univ. of Wisc., AOS)

GRAFIIR Provides AOL TAP ABI Co-registration Analysis: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) GOES-R Analysis Facility Instrument for Impacts on Requirements (GRAFIIR) team used Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) proxy data developed at CIMSS under the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) proxy data team to ascertain the impacts of relaxing ABI instrument requirements. A co-registration error was added to the proxy data so that comparisons between the perturbed and unperturbed data could be analyzed for the Clear Sky Mask, Cloud Phase, and Cloud Top Pressure products. The results were presented to the Atmosphere Ocean Land Technical Advisory Panel (AOL TAP) on September 23, 2008 via teleconference. (J. Sieglaff, CIMSS, 608-265-5357, M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146, A. Huang, CIMSS, 608-263-5283, J. Otkin, CIMSS, 608-265-2476, S. Wanzong, CIMSS, 608-263-1950, T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning sessions "Water Vapor Imagery and Potential Vorticity Analysis" (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/visit/wv_pv.html) and "Interpreting Satellite Signatures" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/visit/sat_signatures.html) were led by staff from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on September 22 and 25, 2008. Personnel from the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices in Anchorage and Juneau (Alaska), Albuquerque (New Mexico), Rapid City (South Dakota), Elko (Nevada), and Paducah (Kentucky) participated in the VISIT lessons. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS)

Other Meetings and Telecons:

Tim Schmit participated in telecons for the GOES Users' Conference program committee and the monthly National Weather Service (NWS) SRSST (Satellite Requirements and Solutions Steering Team) SRSST. One of the topics was regarding the briefing on the need for high-spectral resolution infrared measurements. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

VISITORS:

Visit by MIT/Lincoln Labs Convective Aviation Group: Dr. Haig Iskenderian and Chuck Ivaldi met with the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Nowcasting and Aviation APplications team to discuss satellite-based aviation weather methodologies to enhance nowcasting of rapidly developing convection prior to indication on radar. Dr. Iskenderian presented a CIMSS seminar titled "Applications of GOES imager data to improve convective forecasts". Future collaborations on turbulence and volcanic ash were also discussed. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283, K. Bedka, CIMSS, 608-265-0854, M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, mpav@ssec.wisc.edu)
