GOES-10 Sounder Anomaly: After over 10 years of service, as the operational western Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and supporting the first ever operational sounder data over the Southern Hemisphere, a filter wheel anomaly required that the GOES-10 sounder data were discontinued at 1900 UTC on October 14 (Julian Day 288). Attempts to restart the filter wheel may be made next week by the Office of Satellite Operations. The GOES-10 Imager is continuing its operations. (T. NWA Annual Meeting: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists shared their research with the operational weather forecasting community at the National Weather Association (NWA) Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, October 12-16, 2008. S. Bachmeier showed a poster titled "MODIS Products in AWIPS: Using Research Satellites in Operations". K. Bedka presented "Identification of Aviation Turbulence Signatures in High-Resolution Satellite Imagery" during the aviation session, and J. Gerth presented "An Evaluation of Transitioning New Satellite Products to Operations, and Future Directions" during the satellite session. J. Gerth also gave an oral presentation and two posters on behalf of R. M. Aune and G. S. Wade at the meeting, who were unable to attend due to budgetary issues. The poster titles were “Synthetic satellite imagery from operational forecast model output” and “Assessing development of a refined technique for retrieval of vertical profiles of temperature and moisture from the GOES Sounder, with current real-time products”. Aune's oral presentation was titled “Nearcasting convective destabilization using information from the GOES Sounder”.  In addition, S. Bachmeier and J. Gerth fielded questions from National Weather Service (NWS) forecasters regarding Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R) Proving Ground activities. (J.
