ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

GOES-10 Sounder Resumes Operations: After a hiatus due to a filter wheel anomaly, as of 19:31 UTC on November 6, 2008 the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-10 Sounder has resumed operations for the Southern Hemisphere. Thanks to both the Office of Satellite Operations and ITT for the restoration of the GOES-10 Sounder data. An email on behalf of Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) “congratulated all NOAA personal for great job and doubtless efforts directed to the success of the Sounder operation recovery”. CGMS Report on High Temporal and Spectral Resolution Measurements: A report was submitted by M. Goldberg to the 36th Meeting of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS). It was prepared by T. J. Schmit, J. Li, and Mitchell D. Goldberg. The title is “Report on the Need for High Time and Spectral Infrared Measuements". The report is available upon request. (T. VISITORS:

Enhanced-V Seminar: Geoffrey Feren from the Bureau of Meteorology, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia gave a Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) seminar titled "Characteristics of Eastern Australian-Western Tasman Sea Enhanced-Vs and Their Connection to Severe Weather." The study examined the characteristics of eastern Australian severe weather, based on satellite detection of the enhanced-V signature. (M. Vasys, CIMSS, 608-263-7435; J. Seminar on Using Remote Sensing Observations to Evaluate Mesoscale Models: Professor Susanne Crewell from the Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology at the University of Cologne, Germany, gave a presentation titled "The Potential of Remote Sensing Observations for Evaluating and Improving Mesoscale Models." She is visiting the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) for two months as part of her sabbatical. (M. Vasys, CIMSS, 608-263-7435)
