ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 15, 2008

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Direct Broadcast Terra MODIS Winds at Fairbanks: Winds, cloud, and surface products are now being generated with direct broadcast Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data from the Terra satellite at Fairbanks, Alaska. Products are generated on-site in Fairbanks, Alaska at the NOAA/NESDIS Fairbanks Command & Data Acquisition Station (FCDAS) at Gilmore Creek. Aqua acquisitions at FCDAS have been used for months, but technical issues with processing the Aqua orbital playback (direct broadcast is not available) have not permitted a consistent product suite. Therefore, Terra data acquired at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks are now being transferred to Gilmore Creek, where winds and other products are being generated. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lessons "Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Products in Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS)" (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/visit/modis.html) and "Basic Satellite Principles" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/visit/basic.html) were led by staff from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on October 10 and 13, 2008. Forecasters from the National Weather Service office at Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina and Jackson, Kentucky participated in the VISIT lessons. In addition, the CIMSS Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/) was updated with three new entries demonstrating the use of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and MODIS imagery in the detection of power plant plumes in Minnesota, mountain wave cirrus in Montana, and the remnants of Hurricane Paloma in Florida. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425)

Paper Accepted on AVHRR Cloud Heights: A paper authored by Andrew Heidinger and Michael Pavolonis was accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology. The paper is titled "Gazing at cirrus clouds through a split-window for nearly thirty years. Part I: Methodology" and deals with the algorithm used for the operational and historical Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) cloud products. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov; M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597)

Options for GOES-13 Operations During KOZ Periods Presented to the ICAPOP: A presentation was given (via telcon) to the Images, Cloud, Aerosol, Product Oversight Panel (ICAPOP) on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-13 for options pertaining to operations during Keep Out Zones (KOZ). The option that was suggested was to still collect the imager and sounder data with existing scan mode and schedule (as long as there is no issue with the instrument health and safety), but to not produce any derived level-2 products during KOZ periods. Level-2 products could be produced once they are demonstrated to be insensitive to the affected data. A presentation is available upon request. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, T. Schreiner, CIMSS, 608-263-6754)
