ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING DECEMBER 14, 2008

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

WMO Global Cryosphere Watch Expert Team Meeting: Earlier this year, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Congress approved a feasibility study for a new program, the Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW). GCW will improve the global cryosphere (snow and ice) observing system, analogous to the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW). GCW grew out of the Integrated Global Observing Strategy (IGOS) Cryosphere Theme and will be its primary implementation mechanism. GCW will be part of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS), which contributes to the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). The first GCW Expert Team meeting was held December 4-5 at WMO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. J. Key, who led the development of the IGOS Cryosphere Theme, gave a presentation on the Theme's relevance to GCW. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

Significance: As an implementation mechanism for the IGOS Cryosphere Theme and as a part of WIGOS, the WMO Global Cryosphere Watch will be a solid contributor to GEOSS.

NOAA Mission Goal: Understand Climate Variability and Change to Enhance Society's Ability to Plan and Respond Serve Society's Needs for Weather and Water Information; Support the Nation's Commerce with Information for Safe, Efficient, and Environmentally Sound Transportation

NOAA Cross-Cutting Priorities: Sound, Reliable State-of-the-Art Research; Integrating Global Environmental Observations and Data Management

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Cryosphere Critical Design Review Material Submitted: The GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Cryosphere Team and the AWG Integration Team have prepared a Critical Design Review (CDR) that was delivered to the GOES-R Ground Segment Project (GSP) on Thursday, December 4 for the following Cryosphere Team products: Snow Cover, Snow Depth, and Sea and Lake Ice Concentration, Extent, Thickness/Age, and Motion. The CDR is a major milestone in algorithm development activities for the AWG teams. The CDR materials include the current schedule, Algorithm Design Review risks and actions, requirements, implementation concept, algorithm theoretical basis, system architecture, algorithm design, quality assurance, and risks associated with the six products. The 603 slide presentation contained the information and content that the GSP required regarding the Cryosphere Team activities. The CDR will be presented to the GSP on Thursday, January 8th, 2009. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

2008 NOAA Direct Readout Conference: The 2008 NOAA Direct Readout Conference was held in Miami, Florida December 8-12, 2008. T. Schmit gave a talks titled "Current and Near-term Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Operations and Applications, GOES-10" and "GOES-R Instruments and Products", the former during an international luncheon panel. In addition, overviews were given of the showcase and poster sessions. The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) was also represented at the conference with respect to Man Computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS)-V, direct readout processing, VISITview (Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training View), and education. Twenty-five countries were represented at the conference. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Climate and Cryosphere Science Steering Group Meeting: On December 8-10, the World Climate Research Programme's (WCRP) Climate and Cryosphere (CliC) project held its annual Science Steering Group meeting at the headquarters of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in Geneva, Switzerland. J. Key attended as chair of the CliC Observation and Products Panel. He gave a presentation on recent activities of the Panel, and recommended a number of CliC activities for the upcoming year. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
