ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JANUARY 10, 2009

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Heidinger Elected to International Radiation Commission: Andrew Heidinger was elected to a four-year term on the International Radiation Commission (IRC). The IRC is the oldest subgroup of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS). The role of the IRC is to promote research into atmospheric radiation as well as the application of that research to practical problems. Other new members from the USA are Graeme Stephens and Peter Pilewskie. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757)

GOES-R AWG Cryosphere Critical Design Review: The GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Cryosphere Team and the AWG Integration Team gave the Critical Design Review (CDR) presentation on Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) snow and ice products to the GOES-R Ground Segment Project and GOES-R Program Office on Thursday, January 8 in Camp Springs, MD. The CDR covered the following Cryosphere Team products: Snow Cover, Snow Depth, and Sea and Lake Ice Concentration, Extent, Thickness/Age, and Motion. The CDR is a major milestone in algorithm development activities for the AWG teams. The CDR materials include the current schedule, Algorithm Design Review risks and actions, requirements, implementation concept, algorithm theoretical basis, system architecture, algorithm design, quality assurance, and risks associated with the six products. SSEC's Through the Atmosphere Issue on Climate Science: The current issue of the Space Science and Engineering Center's publication Through the Atmosphere focuses on climate science at SSEC and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). An electronic version of the issue is available at http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/media/newsletter/winter09/winter09tta.pdf. Hardcopies are available on request (Maria Vasys or Mark Hobson). (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; M. Hobson, SSEC, 608-263-337; L. Avila, CIMSS, 608-262-0783)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Overview of RAQMS Support for 2010 CALNEX Mission Presented: The California Air Resources Board (CARB), NOAA, and the California Energy Commission (CEC) are planning a joint field study during 2010 emphasizing the interactions between air quality and climate change issues (CalNex). An overview of planned CALNEX chemical data assimilation and forecasting support by the Real-time Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS) was presented via telecon at the January 5-6 CalNex mobile platform/remote sensing planning meeting in Boulder, CO. The focus for the Boulder meeting was preliminary planning of NOAA activities prior to a broader CARB/NOAA planning meeting scheduled for February 5-6 in Sacramento, CA (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

Version 3.0 of GOES-R Legacy Atmospheric Profile Algorithm Delivered: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) sounding team has delivered the next generation of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) legacy atmospheric profile (LAP) algorithm version 3.0 to the Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Algorithm Integration Team (AIT). The new version contains complete package for all needed instability indices. In addition, the ocean emissivity model is included in the new version for LAP products over ocean. Preview of AMS Annual Meeting Posters:  On January 9, Tim Schmit presented (via telecon) several 1-slide poster briefings to STAR scientists in preparation for the 2009 Sixteenth American Meteorological Society (AMS) Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography and Future Satellite Symposium. Posters included “Soundings from Current and Future Geostationary Satellites”, and “GOES-R Proving Ground Plans for a Weather Event Simulator”. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

VISITORS:

NEXT WEEK:

T. Schmit and M. Pavolonis and a number of Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists will participate in the 2009 Sixteenth American Meteorological Society (AMS) Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography and NPOESS/GOES-R Symposium. Poster titles include “Soundings from Current and Future Geostationary Satellites”, and “GOES-R Proving Ground Plans for a Weather Event Simulator”. M. Pavolonis will give an oral presentation on “New Automated Methods for Detecting Volcanic Ash and Retrieving its Properties from Infrared Radiances”. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov, M. Pavolonis E/RA2, 608-262-9597, mpav@ssec.wisc.edu)
