Participation in the AMS Annual Meeting: T. Schmit, M. Pavolonis, and several Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists participated in the 2009 Sixteenth American Meteorological Society (AMS) Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography and National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS)/ Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Symposium. Poster titles includes “Soundings from Current and Future Geostationary Satellites”, and “GOES-R Proving Ground Plans for a Weather Event Simulator”. M. Pavolonis gave an oral presentation on “New Automated Methods for Detecting Volcanic Ash and Retrieving its Properties from Infrared Radiances”. (T.
