Satellite Applications Briefed at Local NWS Office: On 17 February 2009, a team of Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and NOAA/NESDIS Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) scientists visited the National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Office in Sullivan, WI, to participate in a meeting entitled “Building on a collaborative foundation for success in operational satellite meteorology”. The meeting was organized by J. Gerth (CIMSS) and J. Craven (NWS). ASPB presentations were given by T. Schmit on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) - R Proving Ground efforts, including simulated GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) datasets, by G. S. Wade on improvements to the current GOES Sounder products, and by R. Aune on GOES data used with the CIMSS Regional Assimilation System (CRAS) as well as with convective “nearcasting”. CIMSS presentations were given by K. Strabala on updates with the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer datasets provided to the NWS Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) and by W Feltz on convective initiation and aviation applications from GOES. M. Cronce, the Sullivan NWS liaison to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, spoke about the challenges of the NWS aviation program.
