ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Advanced Dvorak Technique Version3 Algorithm Delivered: The Advanced Dvorak Technique (ADT) is an objective algorithm developed at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) that estimates hurricane intensity from geostationary satellite infrared data. It is now operational at the NESDIS/Satellite Analysis Branch. As part of the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG), CIMSS has been tasked to get the ADT compliant with STAR coding standards as part of algorithm readiness for GOES-R. The compliant ADT Version 3 software package was successfully upgraded and delivered to the AWG group this week on schedule. (T. Olander, CIMSS, 608-265-8005; C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS Nearcasting Model Uses GOES Sounder to "Nearcast" February 10th Oklahoma Tornados: The experimental Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) nearcasting model successfully identified an area of high severe weather risk in central Oklahoma on February 10, 2009, five hours prior to the outbreak of tornadoes. The CIMSS nearcasting model is initialized with two layers of vertically integrated water vapor retrieved hourly from the operational GOES-12 sounder. These layers are projected forward six hours to identify areas of atmospheric destabilization, i.e., drying aloft over moistening below. Details of the event and the success of the nearcast are discussed on the CIMSS blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/2153). (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, R. Petersen, CIMSS, 608-263-5152)

Cyclone Nargis Support Acknowledged: Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar in May of 2008. The Myanmar Principle Representative to the the World Meteorological Organization, Dr. Tun Lwin, offered these comments to the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Tropical Cyclone Group: "I would like to express our gratitude and sincere appreciation for the use of your tropical cyclone web page during the devastating severe Cyclone Nargis, which hit Myanmar on 2-3 May 2008, leaving a death toll of approximately 140,000 lives. We appreciate the invaluable information that you have provided us especially for the time of crisis like Nargis. Keep up your good work." (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

Manuscript accepted in Monthly Weather Review: A paper submitted to Monthly Weather Review entitled "Impact of Satellite-Derived Rapid-Scan Wind Observations on Numerical Model Forecasts of Hurricane Katrina" has been accepted and will appear in a summer issue. The lead author is Dr. Rolf Langland of the Naval Research Lab, with co-authors Chris Velden and Howard Berger (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies). (C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)
