ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Meteorological Satellite Conference: Two Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists, Tim Olander and Derrick Herndon, attended the Meteorological Satellite Conference (MSC) held every other year at Hickham Air Force Base in Hawaii. The meeting focuses on satellite issues related to Pacific Ocean meteorological events and research, with a specific emphasis on tropical cyclones. CIMSS presentations included an update on the Advanced Dvorak Technique, the SATellite CONsensus (SATCON) intensity estimation algorithm, and a satellite data validation campaign in the western Pacific. The presentations were very well received by the local Joint Typhoon Warning Center, and efforts to transition the objective satellite-based methods into operations are underway.(C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168, T. Olander, CIMSS, 608-265-8005, D. Herndon, CIMSS, A. Wimmers, CIMSS)

Storm Prediction Center Hazardous Weather Testbed GOES-R Proving Ground Activities: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists Wayne Feltz, Kristopher Bedka, and Justin Sieglaff participated in Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Proving Ground activities with the National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Prediction Center (SPC) at the NOAA National Weather Center (NWC) in Norman, OK, from 27 April March - 1 May 2009. Feltz and Bedka met with R. Schneider (SPC Chief of Science) and Chris Siewert (OU-CIMMS) to support CIMSS GOES-R Proving Ground involvement in the Hazardous Weather Testbed (HWT). A new GOES Imager Convective Initiation (CI) decision support product, developed by CIMSS, was analyzed daily to provide decision support for 0-1 hour nowcast of convection. The CI data are being processed at CIMSS and then delivered to SPC in N-AWIPS, WDSS-II, and Google Earth formats for forecaster evaluation. CIMSS will have on-site personnel to participate in the SPC HWT field experiment from 26 April - 5 June 2009. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283 and K. Bedka, CIMSS)

Invited Talks at HISE Conference: Michael Pavolonis and Andrew Heidinger both gave invited talks at this week's Optical Society of America's Hyperspectral Imaging and Sensing of the Environment (HISE) conference. The HISE conference is held every two years and took place this year in Vancouver, Canada. M. Pavolonis provided a review of methods to extract information on cloud, ash and aerosol composition from infrared measurements. A. Heidinger gave an overview of the GOES-R cloud remote sensing efforts. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597)

VISITORS:

STAR Deputy Director Visits ASPB and CIMSS: Michael Kalb, STAR Deputy Director, visited the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) in Madison on May 1. This was Dr. Kalb's first trip to Madison as Deputy Director. He visited the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) Data Center and the SSEC Library, met with CIMSS and SSEC directors/executive directors, and was given presentations on ASPB activities. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
