ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING JULY 19, 2009

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

GOES-R Volcanic Ash Technical Readiness Review: The GOES-R Volcanic Ash Technical Readiness Review (TRR) was held on July 17, 2009. The TRR covered the ash detection and height products. The main purpose of the meeting was to demonstrate that the GOES-R Algorithm Implementation Team (AIT) was able to match the output from the ash product development team. The AIT demonstrated exact agreement between the AIT and ash product development team implementations of the algorithm. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov, W. Straka III, CIMSS)

GOES-R Imagery Technical Readiness Review: The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) Cloud and Moisture Imagery Test Readiness Review (TRR) was held on July 17, 2009. This TRR covered the key GOES-R products: cloud and moisture imagery. The simulated GOES-R ABI data were generated by CIMSS were used as validation datasets. (Tim Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.schmit@noaa.gov; K. Bah, CIMSS, 608-262-4462)

Presentations at CALMet2009 conference and at EUMETSAT: Tom Whittaker gave two hands-on workshops and two oral presentations at the Creating Activities for Learning Meteorology (CALMet) meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia. The workshops were on the use of Reusable Content Objects (RCOs) for developing highly interactive, on-line lessons. The presentations were a status update of VISITview software and educational applets, including live demonstrations of new capabilities. Following this week-long conference, he stopped at the EUropean organization for the exploitation of METeorological SATellites (EUMETSAT) to give a seminar on the use of netCDF files for distributing their data, and to meet with staff regarding netCDF and VISITview activities. (T. Whittaker, CIMSS, 608-262-2759)

Lecture on Constituent and Aerosol Data assimilation: Brad Pierce gave a lecture entitled "Constituent and Aerosol Assimilation" at the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) Summer Colloquium on Data Assimilation (July 7-17, 2009, Stevenson, Washington). The Colloquium engages graduate students and individuals with early postdoctoral appointments in the science of data assimilation and fosters the education of the next generation of data assimilation scientists. (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@ssec.wisc.edu)

GOES-R Aviation Algorithm Working Group Overview Presented at IGARSS: An overview of GOES-R Aviation Algorithm Working Group (AWG) activities was presented by Wayne Feltz at the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium in Cape Town, South Africa, on July 14, 2009. GOES-R Aviation application team progress was presented indicating user-ready algorithm status at GOES-R launch for turbulence, convection, and volcanic ash detection. NPOESS participants were present and there was a productive exchange of information. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Hurricane Intensity Estimation 80% ATBD Submitted: The Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) (80% completion) for the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group Winds Product Team/Hurricane Intensity Estimation (HIE) algorithm has been delivered to the Algorithm Integration Team (AIT). The current version of the HIE ATBD, Version 2.1, had been reformatted to conform with the GOES-R AWG documentation standards after AIT review of the initial HIE 80% ATBD in May. (T. Olander, CIMSS, 608-265-8005)

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) distance learning lessons "Water Vapor Imagery and Potential Vorticity Analysis" (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/visit/wv_pv.html), "Basic Satellite Principles" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/visit/basic.html), and "Interpreting Satellite Signatures" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/visit/sat_signatures.html) were led by staff from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on July 15, 16, and 17, 2009. National Weather Service (NWS) forecast offices in Bismarck (North Dakota), Sioux Falls (South Dakota), Midland (Texas), and the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center at Camp Springs (Maryland) participated in the VISIT lessons. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958, S. Lindstrom, CIMSS, 608-263-4425)

Paper Accepted for Publication in Monthly Weather Review: A paper entitled "The Impact of Satellite-derived Polar Winds on Lower-latitude Forecasts", authored by Dave Santek, was accepted for publication in Monthly Weather Review. The paper examines how polar-only observations assimilated into a global model can impact the dynamics of the jet stream, which affects subsequent forecasts down to subtropical latitudes. (D. Santek, CIMSS, 608-263-7410)
