ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING OCTOBER 3, 2009

IN THE PRESS:

EarthSky Interview on Polar Winds: Jeff Key (STAR) was interviewed by EarthSky as part of a series on NASA's Terra satellite. The focus of the interview was satellite-derived polar winds. The article and audio clips are at http://www.earthsky.org/interviewpost/earth/jeff-key-connects-polar-winds-with-your-local-weather. The interview took place in late July (2009) at Wisconsin Public Radio. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ECMWF and Met Office Visits: Steve Wanzong (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies) visited with colleagues at the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the Met Office. Both centers discussed atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) using simulated satellite data. ECMWF in interested in simulated Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) imager data; the Met Office is interested in clear sky water vapor retrieval AMVs using simulated Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) Infrared Sounder (IRS). (S. Wanzong, CIMSS, 608-263-1950; C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168)

GOES-R Lightning AWG/R3 Meeting: Wayne Feltz, co-chair of the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Aviation Team, and Brad Pierce, Aviation Team visibility lead and Aerosol Team member, attended the annual GOES-R Lightning AWG/Risk Reduction (R3) meeting in Huntsville, Alabama on September 29-30. The discussions focused on linking Aviation and Lightning Team activities to foster convective and turbulence research by the inclusion of lightning applications, NOx formation due to lightning, and collaboration between lightning experts and the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) proxy data team for generating proxy lightning data. A visit to the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) by Dr. Larry Carey (Lightning AWG/R3) was coordinated. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283, R.B.
