CIMSS Participates in National Weather Association Conference: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists shared their research with the operational weather forecasting community at the National Weather Association (NWA) Annual Meeting in Norfolk, Virginia from October 19-23, 2009. W. Feltz gave a presentation titled "New Developments in GOES-12 and GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager Convective Initiation Detection" in the Severe Weather session. J. Gerth gave two oral presentations titled "A New Numerical Weather Prediction Approach to the National Digital Forecast Database Sky Cover Grid" and "The Great Lakes Pneumonia Front: A New Study of Land-Sea Interactions". K. Bah gave a talk titled "Operational Uses of Bands on the GOES-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI)". J. Gerth and K. Bah also set up and oversaw a booth highlighting the CIMSS GOES-R Proving Ground Weather Event Simulation (WES) for future GOES-R ABI capabilities. K. Bedka (formerly CIMSS, now SSAI NASA LaRC) and a number of CIMSS coauthors had a poster titled "Objective Satellite-Based Overshooting Top Detection Using Infrared Window Channel Brightness Temperature Gradients". UW-CIMSS Releases Beta Version of an AWIPS WES on the ABI: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) released the beta version of an Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) Weather Event Simulation (WES) on the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) radiances. The WES allows forecasters to access archived data within the AWIPS environment. The DVD contains continental-scale, mesoscale, Hurricane Katrina, and band difference images. Also included was a beta release of the WES guide. The WES DVDs were distributed to NWS office staff from around country at the National Weather Association (NWA) Annual Meeting in Norfolk, Virginia. STAR Director Powell Visits CIMSS: Dr. Al Powell, Director of the NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR), visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) October 22-23, 2009. During the two-day visit he met with CIMSS and Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) directors, the Dean of the University of Wisconsin-Madison graduate school and the Associate Dean for Physical Sciences, CIMSS principal investigators, and ASPB.
