Arctic Council Cryosphere Project Sea Ice Meeting: A meeting of the Arctic Council's “Snow, Water, Ice and Permafrost in the Arctic (SWIPA)” project sea ice component was held in Boulder, Colorado, October 29-30, 2009. It was held at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and supported by NOAA's Climate Program Office. SWIPA was originally proposed as a component of the Norwegian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council. Jeff Key is one of the two US co-leads on the sea ice component of SWIPA. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Lecture on Satellite-based Aviation Decision Support Presented at UW-Madison: An invited lecture titled "Overview of Satellite-based Aviation Applications for Detection of Thunderstorms, Turbulence, and Volcanic Ash" was presented to Wisconsin Alumni Association's "Night at the Laboratory" seminar series. The seminar was an overview of NOAA and NASA funded satellite-based aviation weather research conducted at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and related decision support information for future Joint Program Development Office (JPDO) Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) efficiency improvements due to better observations from satellite platforms. The audience members were from the general public and ranged in age from high school students to retired University of Wisconsin faculty members. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 265-6283)

CIMSS Submits Annual Report on Research Activities: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) has submitted its Annual Report on all projects funded through its Cooperative Agreement with NOAA. The Report covers the period 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2009. Copies of the Report will be made available to all NOAA Program Managers who provide support to CIMSS. (T. The 6th GOES Users' Conference Next Week: The 6th Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Users' Conference will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, November 3-5, 2009. The conference will consist of an overview of the current, near-term and future GOES systems, along with break-out sessions to inter-act with a host of data producers and users. Tours of Space Science and Engineering (SSEC) will also be given.
