CIMSS Satellite Blog Showcasing GOES-13 During Eclipse Outage: A recent Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) satellite blog entry included images from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-13 Sounder and other sensors/products. The animations showcased the benefits of operation through eclipse for a recent convective case. The improved image quality of GOES-13, due to the colder detectors, is also demonstrated, as well as the nearcasting predictions of precipitable water differences product. More information is posted at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/4777 and http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Sounder_6.5_loop.gif. (S. Lindstrom, CIMSS; T. NWS Sullivan Forecasters Visit CIMSS: On Monday, March 15, 2010, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) hosted forecaster Marcia Cronce, senior forecaster Steve Hentz, and Information Technology Officer Jerry Wiedenfeld from the National Weather Service (NWS) Milwaukee/Sullivan, Wisconsin forecast office. During the day-long meeting, the visitors talked with employees at CIMSS and the NESDIS STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) about plans for the upcoming Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R) simulated product demonstration and evaluation testbed which will occur this summer. An overview was given of the convective initiation and nearcasting products that are currently in use at NWS Sullivan. There was also discussion about the progression of the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) migration. CIMSS, ASPB, and NWS Sullivan continue to engage in research to operations transfer exercises involving numerous experimental satellite imagery and products as part of the GOES-R Proving Ground. (T. State of the Arctic Conference: The State of the Arctic Conference, titled "At the Forefront of Global Change", was held 16-19 March 2010 in Miami, Florida. The National Science Foundation and NOAA were the primary sponsors. The goal of the conference was to review our understanding of the arctic physical system and human impacts in a time of rapid environmental change. It was an open international forum for discussion of future research directions aimed toward a better understanding of the arctic system. Topics ranged from a basic scientific understanding of arctic climate to developing response strategies to adapt and mitigate change. Jeff Key gave a presentation titled "The Space Component of an Integrated Arctic Observing System". Xuanji Wang and Yinghui Liu, Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), gave oral and poster presentations. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

Snow and Ice Climate Data Records Forum: Jeff Key held a public forum on snow and ice climate data records (CDRs) as a side meeting at the State of the Arctic Conference in Miami, FL, on March 17. The NOAA Scientific Data Stewardship program is supporting the development of CDRs for the cryosphere, including sea ice concentration, motion, and age, snow cover/extent, and ice/snow surface temperature and albedo. The cryosphere product development team for this project, comprised of scientists from NESDIS (J. Key, PI), the University of Wisconsin, the University of Colorado, and NASA, is coordinating the generation, validation, and archival of fundamental and thematic snow and ice climate data records, building on existing products and efforts as appropriate. In this forum, the development approach for cryosphere CDRs was presented and input from the scientific community was solicited. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
