ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

New Experimental Product Transitioned to Operations at NOAA/NHC: A new model, constructed in part under a previous GOES-R Risk Reduction project, has been transitioned to operations at the National Hurricane Center as part of the Joint Hurricane Testbed project. The model provides a probability of secondary eyewall formation, which is a precursor to a commonly observed event known as an eyewall replacement cycle. These cycles are of great interest as they are associated with large and rapid changes in hurricane intensity and structure. The structure changes are largely manifested as rapid expansions of the wind field and have significant consequences for wave heights and storm surge during landfall. Storm surge represents, by far, the greatest threat to life and property imposed by landfalling hurricanes. The model is described in: Kossin, J. P., and M. Sitkowski, 2009: An objective model for identifying secondary eyewall formation in hurricanes. Mon. Wea. Rev., 137, 876-892. (J. Kossin, NOAA/NCDC at CIMSS; 608-265-5356, M. Sitkowski, CIMSS)

WMO Scientific Advisory/Steering Group on Volcanic Ash: The first meeting of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Scientific Advisory/Steering Group on Volcanic Ash took place on August 2 – 3, 2010 in Montreal, QC, Canada. M. Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR) is a member of this group and participated in the meeting via teleconference. The WMO Scientific Advisory/Steering Group on Volcanic Ash was formed to serve as the single authoritative source of scientific expertise in volcanic cloud monitoring and modeling for the international civil aviation community. Several tasks were assigned to the steering group by the International Volcanic Ash Task Force (IVATF), which met in Montreal on July 27 – July 30, 2010. M. Pavolonis was assigned to lead the space-based instrument and remote sensing sub-task identified by the IVATF. The goal of this sub-task is to provide guidance on, and make recommendations for, satellite-based technologies and techniques for monitoring volcanic clouds. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)

CIMSS and ASPB Visit NWS facilities in Hawaii representing the GOES-R Proving Ground: On August 2, 2010, R. Aune, T. Schmit,  and J. Gerth (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS) met with personnel at the National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Office in Honolulu to discuss how satellite-based products might be used to support specific mission goals of the forecast office.  On August 3, R. Aune and J. Gerth visited the NWS Pacific Region Headquarters to investigate how satellite-based products might help NWS missions in remote areas of the Pacific Region, including Guam and American Samoa where a real need for satellite-based products derived locally from direct broadcast data was identified,  since most satellite data in these regions suffer from delayed receipt times.  On August 4, R. Aune and J. Gerth visited the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) to learn about their mission and discuss whether or not satellite based products would be useful. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, T Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Climate Data Records Program Meeting at NCDC: The first annual principal investigator (PI) meeting for the NOAA climate data records (CDR) program was held at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, North Carolina, August 4-5, 2010. Jeff Key (ASPB) and Bryan Baum (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS) attended the meeting. Results from the first project year were presented by the various PIs. Deliverables, program status, and future directions were discussed by the NCDC program managers. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
