ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

STAR Supports the GOES-15 Operational Acceptance Review: On August 25, 2010, STAR supported the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-15 Operational Acceptance Review (OAR). The two-fold purpose of the OAR is to evaluate compliance of GOES-15 and demonstrate readiness to proceed with transfer of operations to NOAA. X. Wu and T. Schmit participated in the review remotely. (T. J. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

GOES-R Imagery AWG Algorithm Readiness Review: On August 26, 2010 the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) Imagery Algorithm Readiness Review (ARR) was held. The purpose of the ARR was to review the open review items, show that the algorithm within the Framework gives the same answers as the offline research code, perform full end-to-end tests, and establish what extended datasets are needed. This review of the key GOES-R product parameter included the theory for generating scaled radiances and converting them to reflectance factors, brightness temperatures and brightness values. The imagery co-chairs are T. Schmit and W. Wolf. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291; Walter Wolf, (301) 316-5003)

CIMSS Director Meets with Heads of NESDIS and STAR: Steve Ackerman, Director of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), met with Drs. Kizca and Powell in Washington, DC, along with other directors and university collaborators to discuss  opportunities for STAR to design and implement a system, based on its unique experience and perspective on the research-to-operations problem and by leveraging its academic partnerships, that can serve as the model for multi-agency coordination. To help STAR meet it's future needs, the group advocated a new, multi-faceted initiative within STAR called Advanced Satellite Applications and Research Product Processing (ASARPP). (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)

Tropical Cyclone Updates on the CIMSS Satellite Blog: With increasing tropical cyclone activity in the Atlantic Basin, a number of posts were added to the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog during the week of August 23-27, 2010 (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/category/tropical-cyclones). In particular, as a part of the GOES-15 Post Launch Science Test, 1-minute interval Super Rapid Scan Operations (SRSO) visible channel images of Hurricane Danielle showed interesting evolution in the cloud structure of the storm on August 24 (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/6441).
