Bachmeier Named NESDIS Team Member of the Month: Scott Bachmeier of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) was selected NESDIS Team Member of the Month, effective October 2010. Scott was nominated for his efforts to improve public awareness of NOAA satellite applications, both for the general public and for NOAA. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

Paper on Cloud Composition Remote Sensing Published: A paper titled “Advances in Extracting Cloud Composition Information from Spaceborne Infrared Radiances: A Robust Alternative to Brightness Temperatures Part I: Theory” was  published in the September 2010 issue the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology. The paper by Michael Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR) describes the theory behind a new approach for determining cloud phase and detecting volcanic ash and dust clouds. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

EUMETSAT Climate Meeting: A. Heidinger gave an invited talk the Third Users Workshop of the EUropean organization for the exploitation of METeorological SATellites (EUMETSAT) Climate Monitoring Satellite Application Facility (CM-SAF). The meeting was held in Rostock, Germany and included participants from many European countries. Heidinger's talk focused on the collaborative efforts of NOAA and CM-SAF to use the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) for climate studies. Both groups are coordinating a new mutual proposal to the World Meteorological Organization's (WMO) Sustained, Co-Ordinated Processing of Environmental Satellite Data for Climate Monitoring (SCOPE-CM) project. CIMSS Satellite Blog Updates: During the week of September 5-10, 2010, several new posts covering a wide variety of topics were added to the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/). Of particular interest were Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES), Moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) images of the wildfire at Fourmile Canyon near Boulder, Colorado on September 6 (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/6682) and the fire resulting from a deadly natural gas explosion at San Bruno, California on September 9 (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/6752).
