ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 25, 2010

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference in Cordoba: Steve Ackerman, Director of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studes (CIMSS), attended the EUMETSAT conference in Cordoba, Spain, and presented his research on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) cloud properties. While there, he also participated in the Global Space-Based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) workshop, giving a presentation on CIMSS collaborations with STAR scientists in the calibration of the GOES Sounder and the impact of GSICS coefficients on GOES-R sounder products. There is a growing interest in the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC, University of Wisconsin) GOES archive and how that can be leveraged to produce appropriate climatologies with other geostationary satellites. He also participated in the Cloud parameter retrieval WorkShop of EUMETSAT (CWS) breakout sessions, discussing the cloud retrieval work being conducted at CIMSS. The objectives of the meeting are to give an update of the last findings of the intercomparison study, to discuss the way forward with the comparisons to be done by the EUMETSAT fellow, and to prepare for the third CWS in 2011. The next CWS workshop is planned for October 2011 in Madison. (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)

Alaska Aviation and Volcanic Ash Workshop: M. Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS) attended the Alaska Aviation and Volcanic Ash Workshop in Anchorage, AK, September 20 – 23, 2010. The goals of the workshop, which was hosted by the National Weather Service (NWS), were to gather customer (commercial and general aviation) feedback on current aviation decision support systems, identify gaps in aviation decision support systems, to provide users with an overview of current volcanic ash remote sensing and modeling capabilities, and discuss lessons learned from previous volcanic eruptions. M. Pavolonis presented an overview of the volcanic ash products recently developed by NOAA/NESDIS/STAR and the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). The NOAA/CIMSS volcanic ash products will be made available to the Anchorage Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) via the next generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) proving ground. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)

Interagency Meeting on Volcanic Ash: The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and NOAA held a bi-agency meeting in Anchorage, AK on September 24, 2010 to discuss collaborations on volcanic ash cloud monitoring and forecasting, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that the combined expertise and resources of NOAA and the USGS are being used efficiently during the response to a volcanic eruption. M. Pavolonis represented NOAA/NESDIS. Both agencies agreed that volcanic ash forecasts could be improved through collaboration. As such, M. Pavolonis will be responsible for co-authoring an interagency white paper on how satellite derived cloud heights can be used to improve model forecasts of ash dispersion. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Data Collection Period of the GOES-15 NOAA Science Test Concludes: The last day of the NOAA Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-15 Science Test consisted of 1-minute imagery over the Midwest. More information and the rapid scan imagery can be found at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/news/2010-09-24_goes15-1min.html or http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/6849. The GOES-15 NOAA Science test began on 11 August 2010 and concluded on 22 September 2010. The NOAA Science Test was lead by T. Schmit and D. Hillger; other results can be found at http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/projects/goes-p/. (J. Nelson, CIMSS, 608-263-6013, jim.nelson@ssec.wisc.edu; T. Schreiner, CIMSS, 608-263-6754; S.
