NASA Science Community Workshop on Polar Orbiting IR and MW Sounders: Brad Pierce participated in the NASA Science Community Workshop on Polar Orbiting Infrared (IR) and Micro-wave (MW) Sounders (November 1-2, Greenbelt, MD). The focus of the workshop was to discuss how the planned Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Cross-track Infrared Microwave Sounding Suite (CrIMSS), and Metop Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) instruments can continue to support the scientific research enabled by NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) sounders and also discuss requirements for future sounders to address weather, climate, air quality and carbon cycle research. Cloud Remote Sensing Papers Published: Andrew Heidinger and Michael Pavolonis were co-authors on two journal articles on cloud remote sensing that appeared this week. The lead author on the first article was Gala Wind of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This article described a new technique for multi-layer cloud detection. The second paper was led by Gang Hong of Texas A&M University and described a new technique using infrared observations to distinguish between opaque and non-opaque ice clouds. (A. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS Cooperative Agreement Annual Report for FY2010: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) submitted its Annual Report for FY2010 through grants online on 29 October 2010. The 256 page report contains information on 65 projects that support NOAA science, from research to operations. (T. Achtor, CIMSS, 608-263-4206)

Climate Service FY11 Operating Plan: Steve Ackerman attended the Climate Service FY11 Operating Planning meeting, as an observer, held in Charleston, SC, November 4-5. The meeting objectives were: 1) Agree on who does what and how in FY11 to deliver on the 11 Climate service priorities and begin addressing the five Societal Challenges 2) Identify Balanced Scorecard Candidates 3) Identify vulnerabilities and develop a plan to address them.  (S.
