ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING NOVEMBER 13, 2010

IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

Visit to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology Northern Territory Regional Office: M. Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS/STAR) visited the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology regional office in the Northern Territory (NT) during the week of November 7, 2010. The purpose of the visit was to brief VAAC management and forecasters on the NOAA/NESDIS/STAR volcanic ash products and to begin the transition of these products to operations within the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. In addition, during this visit, volcanic ash from the ongoing eruption of Mount Merapi on the Island of Java in Indonesia greatly impacted air traffic in Indonesia, including the major hub of Jakarta. M. Pavolonis used the NOAA/NESDIS/STAR volcanic ash products to provide guidance on the location of volcanic ash within busy Indonesian flight routes to the operational staff at the Darwin VAAC. (M. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

ASPB and CIMSS Presentations at the Eastern Region Satellite Virtual Workshop: STAR/ASPB and Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists gave three presentations at the Eastern Region Satellite Virtual Workshop that was held on November 9, 2010. “The Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite)-R Series” was given by T. Schmit, NOAA/NESDIS STAR; “GOES-R Proving Ground Activities at CIMSS/ASPB” was given by W. Feltz, and “AWIPS II and GOES-R: When Updated Information Processing Systems and New Satellites Meet was given by Jordan Gerth, both of CIMSS. The workshop, which brought together operational users and researchers, was organized by Frank Alsheimer, of the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Charleston, SC. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

ARCPAC Aerosol Manuscript in ACP Discussions: A manuscript entitled "Characteristics, Sources, and Transport of Aerosols Measured in Spring 2008 During the Aerosol, Radiation, and Cloud Processes Affecting Arctic Climate (ARCPAC) Project" by Brock, C. A. et al. is now open for discussion in Atmospheric Chemistry & Physics (ACP) Discussions. The manuscript is part of the "Polar Study using Aircraft, Remote Sensing, Surface Measurements and Models, of Climate, Chemistry, Aerosols, and Transport" (POLARCAT) special issue and presents an overview of the background, scientific goals, and execution of the NOAA ARCPAC project during April 2008. Supplemental material includes results from Real-time Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS) aerosol forecasts. (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov)

Presentation on the GOES-14 NOAA Science Test: At the request of the Office of Satellite Products and Operations (OSPO), a presentation was given on November 8 by D. Hillger and T. Schmit on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-14 Science Test. The presentations covered the test overview, radiance comparisons, and product validations. The NOAA Science Test was led by T. Schmit and D. Hillger; other results can be found at http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/projects/goes-o/. (T. J. VISITORS:

Visit of JPSS Personnel: Joe Mulligan (NOAA) and John Overton (Aerospace Corporation) from the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Project visited the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) / Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on November 9-10. They received briefings and detailed presentations from SSEC/CIMSS and NESDIS staff on the breadth of activities in support of NOAA/JPSS goals including instrument support, algorithm development and science activities, direct broadcast programs, training, visualization and a future JPSS Proving Ground project. Visitors from University of Maryland Center for Innovation: Jerry Hage and Jeff Lucas from the Center for Innovation at the Unviersity of Maryland visited the Advanced Satellite Products Branch November 3-4, 2010. The purpose of the visit was to interview STAR employees about the strategy and structure of STAR, their roles as scientists and managers, and other issues. (J.
