VISITORS:

Tom Schlatter Aviation Decision Support Report Visit: Tom Schlatter of NOAA/OAR has been tasked by the National Weather Service (NWS) to obtain a comprehensive inventory of aviation weather products available at the end of calendar year 2010. The survey will be used by the NWS to determine where gaps in service lie and how to fill those gaps through the development of new or improved products. Tom visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) January 12-13, 2011 to gather information about various satellite-based aviation weather applications research to operations activities. CIMSS and Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) staff briefed him on satellite based aviation weather research in the areas of convective initiation, overshooting-tops, volcanic ash, SO2, fog, visibility, icing, turbulence, hurricanes, winds, and retrievals. Other areas covered were GOES-R Aviation weather requirements, aircraft water vapor measurements, nearcasts, and proving grounds. The report will be submitted in March 2011.
