Article on the GOES-R ABI by Space News: An article on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) was published by Space News. The article includes the status of the spacecraft and instrument, and potential applications. Also included is a figure of simulated ABI images of Hurricane Katrina and an interview with T. Schmit. Bronze Medals for Heidinger and Pavolonis: Andrew Heidinger and Michael Pavolonis were selected as 2010 recipients of the NOAA Bronze Medal. Heidinger and Istvan Laszlo (STAR) were recognized "For developing an enhanced production system for satellite-based real-time radiation data from NOAA's operational geostationary satellites." Pavolonis was recognized "For providing near real-time volcanic ash information in the critical period following the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano." (J. GOES-R AWG Land Surface Emissivity Version 4.0 Algorithm Delivered: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) sounding team has developed and delivered the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) algorithm working group (AWG) land surface emissivity (LSE) version 4.0 algorithm to the GOES-R algorithm integration team (AIT). National Aviation Weather Program Council Volcanic Ash Meeting: The National Aviation Weather Program Council (NAWPC) Committee for Aviation Services and Research (CASR) Working Group for Volcanic Ash (WG/VA) met on February 2, 2011. M. Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS), technical advisor to the WG/VA, participated via phone. The primary goal of the meeting was to formulate the U.S. position on volcanic ash forecasting and avoidance procedures in preparation for the next International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) convened International Volcanic Ash Task Force (IVATF) meeting in July 2011. Participation at AMS annual meeting: Tom Whittaker was the co-chair of the Interactive Information and Processing Systems (IIPS) 27th annual Conference, held during the annual meeting of the American Meteorolgical Society in Seattle, WA. The IIPS Conference is the longest running conference at the annual meeting, and this year attracted more than 190 presenters in nearly 40 sessions. (T. Whittaker, CIMSS)
