New Great Lakes Water Cycle Diagram from CIMSS: The Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts (WICCI) released a climate adaptation report this week featuring a new water cycle graphic from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). Working with hydrologists from NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL) and Wisconsin Sea Grant, CIMSS commissioned an artist to create an image highlighting human water consumption in the natural water cycle. The diagram can be found on page 46 of the report which is available for download from the WICCI site at http://www.wicci.wisc.edu/. (M. Mooney, CIMSS 608-265-2123, S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)

GOES-R ABI Waiver Analysis: Conditions matching a slightly out-of-specifications waiver request for the 8.5 and 10.35 micrometer band on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) were simulated by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) GOES-R Analysis Facility for Instrument Impacts on Requirements (GRAFIIR) team. Simulated spectra, as well as high-spectral resolution Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) data, were altered in order to simulate the waivers. The GRAFIIR team provided analysis to the GOES-R Program Office as a decision-making aid. The simulated waiver data were compared to spec-complaint values. The analysis was presented on 11 February 2011 to the Integrated Modeling Working Group (IMWG) and the "Deviation/Waiver Request Tiger Team" assembled to address the waivers. (M. Gunshor, CIMSS, 608-263-1146; T. J. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Global Cryosphere Watch Implementation Strategy Drafted: Barry Goodison (World Meteorological Organization, WMO) and Jeff Key (STAR) drafted an Implementation Strategy for the concept of a WMO Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) program. The Implementation Strategy will be presented to the 16th WMO Congress in May of this year. Earlier this week it was presented to the WMO Presidents of Technical Commissions, who were unanimously in favor of the program. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
