GOES-R Volcanic Ash Product Teletraining: M. Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS) and Justin Sieglaff (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies) hosted a 3-week series of teletraining sessions with the National Weather Service (NWS) Alaska Region on the next generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) volcanic ash algorithms developed by the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG). In total, 15 people from the NWS Alaska Region participated. The GOES-R AWG volcanic ash products are being provided to the NWS Alaska Region via the GOES-R Proving Ground. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov, J. Sieglaff, CIMSS)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

Satellite Hyperspectral Sensor Workshop: An international satellite hyperspectral sensor workshop was held on March 29-31, 2011 in Miami, FL. This workshop brought together many national and international experts (representing eight countries) to address hyperspectral applications in weather forecasting, atmospheric chemistry and greenhouse gases. The presentations by R. Aune, J. Li, H. Revercomb, T. Schmit and B. Pierce were, respectively: "Applications of hyperspectral observations to numerical weather prediction", "Tropical cyclone trajectory and storm precipitation forecast improvement using single field-of-view Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) soundings", "Recent developments aiding Geo-hyperspectral observations", "High-spectral resolution IR observations for weather-related applications", and "The use of current and future hyperspectral trace gas retrievals in atmospheric chemistry research at NOAA". More information can be found at http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/star/meeting_Hyper2011.php. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

VISITORS:

Indian Visitors Return Home: Sanjib Deb from the Indian Space Research Organization / Space Applications Center has been visiting SSEC since last October. He spent his six months here working with Chris Velden, Steve Wanzong, and Tony Schreiner mastering the wind cloud tracking software and comparing different cloud height assignment approaches. He will continue this work back at ISRO / SAC in preparation for the launch of INSAT-3D in July 2011. Indira Rani Pillai from the Indian National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting within the Ministry of Earth Sciences has been working with Bob Aune for the past four months learning the CIMSS regional data assimilation system, testing it over the Indian region, and preparing for INSAT-3D winds and soundings. Both returned to India on 31 March. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, robert.aune@noaa.gov; C. Velden, CIMSS, 608-262-9168; W.P. Menzel, CIMSS, 608-263-4930)
