ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

NASA Applied Remote Sensing and Training Advisory Panel: Brad Pierce was asked to serve as a member of the advisory panel for NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing and Training Program (ARSET). The mission of the ARSET program is to provide education and training to facilitate the use of remote sensing data for air quality applications. The advisory group is composed of university, industry, and federal scientists with expertise in remote sensing capabilities and the needs of the end user community. The purpose of the advisory group is to keep ARSET up to date on research topics and remote sensing capabilities relevant to air quality applications and encourage interactions among remote sensing experts and end-users. CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) sessions "The University of Wisconsin Convective Initiation Product" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/training/visit/training_sessions/the_uw_convective_initiation_product/), "Objective Satellite-Based Overshooting Top and Enhanced-V Anvil Thermal Couplet Signature Detection" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/training/visit/training_sessions/objective_overshooting_top_and_thermal_couplet_detection/), and "The University of Wisconsin NearCasting Product" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/training/visit/training_sessions/the_uw_nearcasting_product/) were led by S. Lindstrom on June 2, 2011. Thirty people from the National Weather Service forecast office at Minneapolis, Minnesota participated in the VISIT lessons. In addition, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog was updated with posts containing Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) and Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) imagery from a severe weather event which produced an EF-3 rated tornado in southwestern Massachusetts on June 1, 2011 (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8271), and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images of the "Wallow Fire", which became the fourth largest fire on record in Arizona on June 3, 2011 (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8279).
