Teacher Workshop on Climate Literacy and Earth Data Tools: With support from NOAA, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) organized a teacher workshop at the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) summer meeting in Santa Fe, July 12-13, 2011. The workshop had an overall theme of Earth science education with an integral strand dedicated to climate literacy. Along with sessions on climate change science, climate resources, and ways to effectively communicate climate change, educators could choose from several breakout sessions demonstrating ways that Earth science data can be used in science classrooms. The breakout sessions were led by ESIP members from NOAA, NASA, EPA and several Universities from around the country. CIMSS presenters included Margaret Mooney and Tommy Jasmin. More information can be found on-line at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/teacherworkshop/esip/. (M. Mooney, CIMSS/SSEC, 608-265-2123, N. Jackson, NOAA/NESDIS, 301-713-2089)

VISITORS:

Swedish Scientist Visits CIMSS: Dr. Joe Sedlar from the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) visited Andrew Heidinger and colleagues this past week. Dr Sedlar works in the SMHI group that participates in the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Climate Monitoring Satellite Application Facility (CM-SAF). The CM-SAF is generating a data set that is similar to the NOAA Pathfinder Atmospheres Extended (PATMOS-x) climate record. During his visit, Dr Sedlar showed numerous comparisons of the two climate records. (A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757)
