UW-Madison Team Winds NASA eXploration Habitat Academic Innovation Challenge: An interdisciplinary team of University of Wisconsin-Madison undergraduate students won the NASA eXploration Habitat Academic Innovation Challenge ("X-Hab"). The competition charges university teams to design and rapidly develop inflatable, habitable spaces that NASA can integrate onto an existing demonstration laboratory. Several UW-Madison units, including the departments of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Physics, the School of Human Ecology, Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium, and the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC), as well as local and regional companies, provided financial and in-kind support for the project. Fred Best, one of SSEC's Executive Directors, worked with the team in an advisory capacity. A time-lapse video of the team setting up its habitat in the Engineering Centers Building on the UW-Madison campus is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYeg6l6iHbc&feature=channel_video_title. More information is available at http://www.news.wisc.edu/19535. (H. Revercomb, SSEC; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

"Through the Atmosphere": The Summer 2011 issue of "Through the Atmosphere" is available online at http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/media/newsletter/summer2011/index.html. This issue discusses GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) activities at the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the new supercomputer obtained through a collaboration with STAR. There are also short articles on McIDAS-V support for the NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) and the "Satellites See Wisconsin" airport exhibit. (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)

Training Sessions on GOES-R Fog and Cloud Type Products: M. Pavolonis (NOAA/NESDIS) and Corey Calvert (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies) hosted two teletraining sessions (July 7 and 21, 2011) with the National Weather Service (NWS) Alaska Region on the next generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) fog and cloud type products developed by the GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG). In total, 31 people from the NWS Alaska Region participated. The GOES-R AWG fog and cloud type products are being provided to the NWS Alaska Region via the GOES-R Proving Ground. In addition, on July 19, 2011, M. Pavolonis and C. Calvert spent the day at the NWS Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Sullivan, WI as part of the GOES-R Local Area Testbed being conducted by CIMSS. While there, they trained a forecaster on the use of the GOES-R fog and cloud type products, both of which were positively received. (M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov, C. Calvert, CIMSS)

VISITORS:

CUNY/CREST Scientist Visits CIMSS: Dr. Rouzbeh Nazari, Assistant Professor of Construction Management and Civil Engineering at City University of New York (CUNY) and Research Associate at the NOAA Cooperative Remote Sensing Science and Technology Center (CREST), visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) July 21-22, 2011. Dr. Nazari discussed his recent developments in the remote sensing of ice with those CIMSS and NOAA scientists that are leading the development of the GOES-R algorithms for ice properties. He met with other CIMSS scientists to discuss water vapor retrieval. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)
