OCONUS Proving Ground Meeting: The OCONUS (outside continental U.S.) Proving Ground meeting was held at the University of Alaska Southeast campus (UAS) in Juneau, 26-28 July 2011. The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-R Proving Ground program focuses on satellite products that will be useful for National Weather Service forecasters. This meeting also included discussions of future Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) products and a discussion of Canada's planned Polar Weather and Communication (PCW) satellite mission. Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) participants included Scott Bachmeier, Wayne Feltz, Jordan Gerth, Andy Heidinger, Mike Pavolonis, Jeff Key, and Tim Schimit (remotely). (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

CI Director Executive meeting: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) director Steve Ackerman and other cooperative institute (CI) Director Executive Committee members (Peter Lamb, Michael Banks, Shirley Pomponi) met in Silver Spring with Craig McLean, Larry Robinson, Sandy MacDonald, Linwood Pendleton and Louisa Koch to continue discussions that arose during the annual CI meeting in May. Topics included Task I funding, the role if CIs in NOAA research, CI input into consortia criteria, Leveraging CIs to strengthen NOAA's social science capabilities and education collaborations. The directors also met with Sea Grant (Jon Pennock, Leon Camman) to begin discussions on possible future collaborations. (S. Ackerman, CIMSS, 608-263-3647)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

IPCC AR5 Second Lead Author's Meeting: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report 5 (AR5) Second Lead Authors (LAM2) meeting was held in Brest, France during the week of 18-22 July. Reviewer comments to the AR5 Zero Order Draft were discussed and plans for the First Order Draft were established. (J. Kossin, NOAA/NCDC, 608-265-5356)

GOES-15 Imager and Sounder Images: Images from both the Imager and Sounder of GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) -15 have been compared to images from both the operational eastern and western GOES. GOES-15 is located near longitude 90 West. Data from the Imager and Sounder are being made available until August 5, 2011. Qualitative comparisons show the GOES-15 images to be of good quality, similar to the end of the NOAA science test. Images and animations can be found at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8529. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; S. Lindstrom, CIMSS; S. VISITORS:

CICS graduate student visits CIMSS: Manisha Ganeshan, a University of Maryland PhD graduate student at the Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS), which is hosted at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) in College Park, MD, visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) in Madison, WI for the week of 18-22 July 2011. Ganeshan presented a seminar titled “Impact of model resolution on the forecast skill of warm season rainfall over the Chesapeake Bay”. Discussions and exercises were held with Ganeshan throughout the week on hyperspectral satellite vertical profile retrievals, emissivity, and skin temperature; satellite applications with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model; and, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder capabilities.
