IN THE PRESS:

ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

NOAA Scientist Schmit Receives DOC Silver Medal: Tim Schmit of the NESDIS/STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch, and Don Hillger of the STAR Regional and Mesoscale Meteorology Branch in Fort Collins, CO, received a Department of Commerce Silver Medal "For revolutionizing NOAA Science Tests for geostationary satellites, significantly reducing the likelihood of a single satellite configuration." (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

National Climate Assessment Workshop on Extremes: The US National Climate Assessment Workshop on Extremes was held in Asheville, NC, 25-27 July 2011. Challenges of detection and attribution studies dealing with extremes, and ways forward, were discussed. An outline for the first of a series of AMS Bulletin articles was drafted. (J. Kossin, NOAA/NCDC, 608-265-5356)

ADEB meeting: Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and STAR Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) scientists participated remotely in the GOES-R Algorithm Development Executive Board (ADEB) meeting August 3-4, 2011. Presentations on option 2 products were given by Tony Wimmers, Jason Brunner, Zhenglong Li, Yinghui Liu, Mike Pavolonis, and Jeff Key. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; Y. Liu, CIMSS, 608-265-8620)

NOAA Climate Data Records Team Meeting: The second annual team meeting for the NOAA Climate Data Records (CDR) program was held at the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) in Asheville, North Carolina, August 2-3, 2011. Jeff Key and Andy Heidinger attended. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

VISITORS:

ESRL Scientist Visits CIMSS: Dr. Michael Fiorino of the Assimilation and Modeling Branch at NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) in Boulder, CO visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) on August 3, 2011.  Mike is involved in numerical modeling projects which include the Tropical Cyclone Tracks from Ensemble Models and the Hurricane Forecast Improvement Project (HFIP).  In addition to meeting with the tropical storm team and the satellite data assimilation group at CIMSS, he gave a seminar titled "Tropical Cyclone Tracking:  It's (a lot) more than location, location, location". He showed how model diagnostics can be used to quantify the predictability of hurricane intensity and location. (R. Aune, E/RA2, 608-262-1071, robert.aune@noaa.gov)

CREST Graduate Students Visit CIMSS: Two PhD graduate students from the City College of the City University of New York (CCNY), at the Cooperative Remote Sensing and Technology Center (CREST), visited the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), 1-4 August 2011. Marzieh Azarderakhsh gave a seminar titled “Dynamics of the terrestrial water budget over large scale basins using satellite data”; while Hamidreza Norouzi presented another, titled “Generating an effective temperature for estimation of microwave land surface emissivity”. Lively discussions and exercises were held with the students and CIMSS staff on hyperspectral satellite vertical profile retrievals and radiative transfer; emissivity considerations in both the infrared and microwave, current Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder capabilities and future GOES-R applications, MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) processing, an introduction to the Man computer Interactive Data Access System (McIDAS-V), and other CIMSS and University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) research projects.
