Monthly Weather Review Article Selected as Paper of Note: An upcoming article, "Intensity and Structure Changes During Hurricane Eyewall Replacement Cycles" by Matthew Sitkowski (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS)/Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at UW-Madison), James P. Kossin (NOAA/CIMSS), and Christopher M. Rozoff (CIMSS), was selected as a Paper of Note for the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. The authors analyzed 14 Atlantic basin hurricanes to develop an unprecedented climatology of inner-core intensity and structure changes associated with eyewall replacement cycles. The article will appear in Monthly Weather Review later this year. (M. Sitkowski, 608-263-6768, sitkowski@wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

GOES-14 Imager and Sounder Images: Images from both the Imager and Sounder of GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) -14 have been compared to images from both the operational eastern and western GOES. GOES-14 is located near longitude 105 West. Data from the Imager and Sounder were made available until August 19, 2011. Qualitative comparisons show the GOES-14 images to be of good quality, similar to the end of the NOAA science test. Images and animations can be found at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8597, including an animation of fog from three GOES (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/110810_g11_g14_g13_vis_lax_anim.gif). Other GOES-14 images of Tropical Storm Gert can be found on the CIMSS satellite blog: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8611. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; S. Lindstrom, CIMSS; S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)

CIMSS Prepares for AWIPS II: On August 17 and 18, 2011, Kaba Bah, Lee Cronce, and Jordan Gerth from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) participated in a Technical Interchange Meeting (TIM) with Raytheon Technical Services in Omaha, Nebraska. The purpose of the TIM was to understand development strategies and discuss issues pertaining to the implementation of operational, experimental, and future satellite imagery and products in the migrated Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS “II”). On August 19, 2011, they visited the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Valley, Nebraska, to see how the software has been deployed and used in the operational environment. Currently, CIMSS provides AWIPS-formatted experimental satellite products to 70 NWS offices nationwide as part of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R-Series (GOES-R) Proving Ground. (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)

GOES-R AWG Cryosphere Algorithm Readiness Review: The GOES-R Algorithm Working Group (AWG) Cryosphere Team and the AWG Algorithm Integration Team (AIT) gave the Algorithm Readiness Review (ARR) presentation on Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) option 2 snow and ice products to the GOES-R Ground Segment Project (GSP) on August 19, 2011. The ARR presented the current schedule, Test Readiness Review risks and actions, requirements allocation, quality assurance, framework architecture, algorithm validation and software readiness, and the algorithm package content for the snow depth, sea and lake ice cover, concentration, thickness/age, and motion products. The 830 slide presentation contained the information and content that the GSP required regarding the Cryosphere Team Option 2 product activities. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; X. Wang, CIMSS, 608-261-1390; Y. Liu, CIMSS, 608-265-8620; W. Wolf, Walter.Wolf@noaa.gov, E/RA2, 301-316-5003)
