ASPB AND CIMSS WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 3, 2011

IN THE PRESS:

Flying into Irene: An article on three University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers who joined NOAA researchers on a "hurricane hunter" flight is posted on NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research web site (http://researchmatters.noaa.gov/news/Pages/ireneflight.aspx). Chris Rozoff and Matthew Sitkowski of the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), and Lisha Roubert, a graduate student in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, conduct hurricane research in Madison, The traveled to Tampa, FL, for flights into Hurricane Irene. During these flights, the three University of Wisconsin researchers monitored the onboard aircraft instrumentation. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS Hurricane Research Credited at Boston Museum of Science: Two Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) scientists, "stranded" in Boston due to hurricane Irene, visited the Boston Museum of Science and attended a special 30 minute overview regarding hurricane informational outreach conducted by Sean Fankhauser, Education Associate. Among material presented was a CIMSS slide of a Hurricane Dean montage and morphing animation developed by Dr. Tony Wimmers (CIMSS). Mr. Fankhauser inquired about a possible outreach endeavor in spring 2012 titled "Extreme Weather" and if SSEC/CIMSS would be interested in participating at the Boston Museum of Science. Such a collaboration is being explored. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283, J. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-263-3434)

Participation in CIMSS-MKX Local Area Testbed: On August 30, 2011 J. Gerth and S. Bachmeier from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) spent the day at the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office at Milwaukee/Sullivan, Wisconsin (MKX) to participate in the ongoing CIMSS-MKX Local Area Testbed. This effort is intended to promote a successful Research to Operations concept by fostering a close interaction between CIMSS researchers and NWS operational staff, exposing forecasters to the types of satellite products that will be available with the launch of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R series (GOES-R). The primary activity of the day was summarized in a blog post contributed by forecaster Steve Davis (NWS-MKX) that was posted on the GOES-R Proving Ground at NOAA's Hazardous Weather Testbed site (http://goesrhwt.blogspot.com/2011/08/mvfr-ifr-cloud-assessment-3-areas.html). VISITORS:

Vistor from the NASA Applied Remote Sensing and Training Program: Richard Kleidman, co-lead of the Applied Remote Sensing Education and Training (ARSET, http://airquality.gsfc.nasa.gov/) air quality project at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, visited with Advanced Satellite Products Branch and Cooperative Institute for Meterological Satellite Studies staff to discuss coordination of August 2012 Infusing satellite Data into Environmental Applications International (IDEA-I, http://idea-i.ssec.wisc.edu/) and Seven SouthEast Asian Studies (7-SEAS, http://7-seas.gsfc.nasa.gov/) air quality training activities at the Thailand Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA, http://www.gistda.or.th/gistda_n/en/). IDEA-I is one of the US Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Global Earth Observation Systems of Systems (GEOSS) Earth Observations in Decision Support Projects sponsored by the Capacity Building and User Interface Committee. 7-SEAS is a collaborative effort between the U.S. State Department and governments in Southeast Asia, NCAR Research Applications Laboratory, NASA Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) program, and the Office of Naval Research international field offices (R.B. Pierce, E/RA2, 608-890-1892, brad.pierce@noaa.gov, K. Strabala and Allen Huang, CIMSS)
