EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference 2011: Many scientists from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) attended the 2011 European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Meteorological Satellite Conference held in Oslo, Norway, 5-9 September. The themes of the conference were current and future satellites, instruments, and applications; assimilation of satellite data into numerical weather prediction models; monitoring climate and understanding climate processes based on satellite data; satellite-based observations of the oceans, with an emphsis on the Arctic; nowcasting; atmospheric composition; and facilitating data access and utilization. Chris Velden (CIMSS) served on the Program Committee. The presentations from ASPB and CIMSS personnel were (co-authors are not listed):

(A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

GOES-15 Sounder Processing: In preparation for the subsequent operational implementation of GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) -15 for western US coverage, GOES-15 Sounder products are being generated by the  Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS). Sample derived product images (DPI), generated in near-real time, are available at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/rt/sounder-dpi.php. Qualitative comparisons show the GOES DPI of fair quality, similar to that at the end of the NOAA GOES-15 check-out science test. (J. Nelson, CIMSS, 608-263-6013, jim.nelson@ssec.wisc.edu; T. Schreiner, CIMSS, 608-263-6754, tony.schreiner@ssec.wisc.edu; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) session "Basic Satellite Principles" was led by S. Lindstrom on September 6, 2011. Staff from the National Weather Service forecast office at Shreveport, Louisiana participated in the VISIT lesson. In addition, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog was updated with posts covering the recent historic wildfires in eastern Texas (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8828) and the upwelling of cold water along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8834).
