ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

Inter-Commission Coordination Group on WIGOS Meeting: The World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) Inter-Commission Coordination Group on the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) held its first meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, September 26-30, 2011. Fred Branski of NOAA is the ICG-WIGOS chair. Jeff Key (STAR) attended as a representative of the WMO Executive Council Panel of Experts on Polar Observations, Research, and Services (EC-PORS). Key also represented the new WMO Global Cryosphere Watch (GCW) program, which is overseen by EC-PORS and is part of WIGOS. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu)

Significance: NOAA will play a leading role in the Global Cryosphere Watch. GCW contributes to GEOSS through WIGOS.

NOAA Mission Goal: Understand Climate Variability and Change to Enhance Society's Ability to Plan and Respond Serve Society's Needs for Weather and Water Information; Support the Nation's Commerce with Information for Safe, Efficient, and Environmentally Sound Transportation

NOAA Cross-Cutting Priorities: Sound, Reliable State-of-the-Art Research; Integrating Global Environmental Observations and Data Management

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

GOES-R 100% Option 2 Product Delivery: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Option 2 (“Future Capability”) Algorithm Working Group (AWG) teams worked with the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES)-R Algorithm Implementation Team (AIT) to complete the 100% delivery of the Cryosphere, Land Surface Emissivity and Aviation Option 2 deliveries of the Algorithm Theoretical Basis Documents (ATBD) and associated information. These products include Land Surface Emissivity, Fog detection, Sulfur Dioxide detection, Turbulence, Ice Cover, Ice Age and Ice Motion. Delivery of the final, complete Option 2 product package (ATBDs and software) from the AIT to the GOES-R Project Office was made on September 30, 2011. (W. Feltz, CIMSS, 608-265-6283; M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, Mike.Pavolonis@noaa.gov; C. Calvert, CIMSS, 608-262-1023; J. Li, CIMSS, 608-262-3755; J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; G. Martin, CIMSS, 608-263-6794;T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

CIMSS Provides Teaching at EUMETSAT Summer School: During the week of 19 September, Ralf Bennartz (Cooperative Institute for Meterological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Studies (AOS)), Mike Hiley (AOS), and Tom Whittaker (CIMSS) instructed more than 25 attendees from Europe and Africa at the 2011 International School on Applications with the Newest Multi-spectral Environmental Satellites, put on by the EUropean organization for the exploitation of METeorological SATellites (EUMETSAT). Prof. Bennartz taught many classes, while Mr. Hiley organized hands-on labs, and along with Mr. Whittaker provided assistance for the students during the labs. Mr. Whittaker also discussed scripting and algorithm development using the McIDAS-V (Man computer Interactive Data Access System) software package during one tutorial. (R. Bennartz, CIMSS and AOS, 608-265-2249)

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

CIMSS and ASPB Scientists Visit NWS Office: Wayne Feltz (CIMSS) and Andrew Heidinger (ASPB) visited the National Weather Service (NWS) Forecast Office in Sullivan, Wisconsin on Tuesday, September 27. They met with Marcia Cronce of the NWS and discussed the application and utility of satellite products and imagery generated at Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) and the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB). Marcia provided several comments on the current products and suggestions for new products. This effort is supported by the GOES-R Proving Ground Program. (W. Feltz, CIMSS,608-265-6283, A. Heidinger, E/RA2, 608-263-6757, andrew.heidinger@noaa.gov, )

CIMSS VISIT Activities: The Virtual Institute for Satellite Integration Training (VISIT) session "Trough of Warm Air Aloft (TROWAL) Identification" (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/training/visit/training_sessions/trowal_identification/) was led by S. Lindstrom on September 27, 2011. Staff from the National Weather Service forecast office at Wichita, Kansas participated in the VISIT lesson. In addition, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog was updated with posts discussing autumn tree colors and a large fire burn scar in Minnesota (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/date/2011/09/26), a persistent cut-off low over the north-central US (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8913), and Hurricane Ophelia (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/8927).
