ITEMS FOR THE ADMINISTRATOR:

ITEMS FOR THE ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR:

Schmit Receives T. Theodore Fujita Research Achievement Award from the NWA: Tim Schmit received the T. Theodore Fujita Research Achievement Award at the 2011 National Weather Association (NWA) annual meeting in Birmingham, Alabama. The citation read “for excellence in promoting and extending the use of satellite data within the operational community currently and in the future”. This award is the association's highest honor for a member whose research has significantly contributed to the field of operational meteorology. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

ITEMS FOR THE OFFICE DIRECTOR, STAR:

ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

GOES-15 Operational Readiness Review: On October 12, T. Schmit participated via a telecom in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-15 Operational Readiness Review (ORR) that was held at NOAA Satellite Operations Facility. This review demonstrated readiness to transition GOES-15 spacecraft and instruments into GOES-West Operations and readiness of GOES-15 products and users. Several quantitative products need GOES-15 specific coefficient files to be supplied by STAR. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

7th GOES Users' Conference at the NWA: NOAA hosted the 7th GOES Users’ Conference (GUC) in conjunction with the 36th Annual National Weather Association (NWA) meeting. The GUC was held October 20-21 in Birmingham, Alabama. The conference included a joint opening session followed by separate breakout sessions. CIMSS and ASPB members participated in a number of ways, on the planning committee (T. Schmit), invited oral presentations (M. Pavolonis) and posters (G. Wade). More information is available at http://www.nwa2011.com/?p=1401. (T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov; M. Pavolonis, E/RA2, 608-263-9597, mpav@ssec.wisc.edu; G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, gary.s.wade@noaa.gov)

CIMSS Participation in the NWA Annual Meeting: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) participated in the 36th National Weather Association (NWA) annual meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, from 16 to 20 October 2011.  J. Gerth and J. Li each gave an oral presentation on using satellite observations for weather forecasting during the plenary sessions targeted to the operational meteorology community.  K. Bah and L. Cronce presented posters in a joint session with the 7th Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Users' Conference.  CIMSS also had a booth to showcase their role in the GOES-R Proving Ground and demonstrate the coming capabilities of the GOES-R atmospheric instruments.  The 2012 NWA annual meeting will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, with substantial CIMSS participation on the program committee.  (J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942)

GOES Images of Major Blowing Dust Event in Texas and New Mexico: The Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Satellite Blog was updated with a post containing a comparison of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-11, GOES-15, and GOES-13 visible and shortwave IR images which showed a very large blowing dust cloud moving rapidly southward across the Texas/New Mexico border region on October 17, 2011 (http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/9038). The blowing dust reduced surface visibilities to near zero in some locations as winds gusted as high as 75 mph. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958)
