International Workshop on Air Quality Forecasting Research: Brad Pierce attended the 3rd Annual International Workshop on Air Quality Forecasting Research (IWAQFR, http://www.arl.noaa.gov/IWAQFR_home.php) on November 29 - December 1, 2011 in Potomac, MD. This year’s plenary session focused on international forecasting perspectives and included presentations from operational air quality forecasting agencies from Europe, Mexico, China, Australia, Canada, and the US.  Pierce gave a presentation during the Data Assimilation Theme session entitled “Nested Global and Regional aerosol and ozone assimilation and forecasting experiments during the NOAA CalNex field mission”, which summarized global-to-regional aerosol and ozone assimilation studies using the Real-time Air Quality Modeling System (RAQMS) coupled to a developmental version of the National Air Quality Forecasting Capability (NAQFC) North American Model – Community Multi-scale Air Quality (NAM-CMAQ) and the Weather Research and Forecasting – Chemistry (WRF-CHEM) forecast model. IWAQFR is sponsored by NOAA, Environment Canada, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It focuses on improving operational air quality forecasts, promoting collaborations among air quality forecasting researchers and practitioners, and nurturing an international air quality forecasting community. ITEMS FOR THE DIVISION CHIEF, CoRP:

GOES-15 Imagery AWIPS Test: Prior to the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)-15 becoming operational on December 6, NOAA conducted an end-to-end test on November 29 which briefly substituted GOES-15 for GOES-11 as the source of GOES-West satellite imagery. Using the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) and N-AWIPS software packages, the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) monitored the flow of GOES-15 imager and sounder imagery from the test facility. More information, including select animations of visible and water vapor imagery before and after the temporary switch-over, can be found at http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/blog/archives/9278. (S. Bachmeier, CIMSS, 608-263-3958; J. Gerth, CIMSS, 608-263-4942; T. Schmit, E/RA2, 608-263-0291, tim.j.schmit@noaa.gov)

Arctic Report Card 2011 is Available: The NOAA Arctic Report Card for 2011 is now available at http://www.arctic.noaa.gov/reportcard/. Jeff Key and Yinghui Liu (Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies, CIMSS) contributed to the "Temperature and Clouds" section. The Arctic Report Card provides clear, reliable and concise environmental information on the current state of the Arctic relative to historical time records. It is intended for a wide audience, including scientists, teachers, students, decision-makers and the general public. (J. Key, E/RA2, 608-263-2605, jkey@ssec.wisc.edu; Y. Liu, CIMSS, 608-265-8620)

ASPB Completes Contributions to CFC: Completed pledges for charitable contributions from the Advanced Satellite Products Branch (ASPB) to the 2012 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) in south central Wisconsin were provided to the United Way of Dane County on 1 Dec 2011. Although slightly less than last year's total, ASPB (along with a part-time NOAA/OAR (Office of Atmospheric Research) colleague from Norman, OK) again contributed over $4000. (G.S. Wade, E/RA2, 608-263-4743, gary.s.wade@noaa.gov)
